Bike Security

Hi all,

after numerous thefts at work i'm after ideas on further security for my bike. Last week, bandits have come equipped with cordless grinders so i'm not sure the best way to go any further than i already have.

Pic of bike in question. Parked in the Adelaide CBD very near security cameras. In a very busy thoroughfare (metro hospital). Bike not super expensive compared to others around.

I currently have a KOVIX Brake disc lock, a Kryptonite key wire lock for the front wheel, as well as a Kryptonite 14mm Evolution D lock. Most of my bases are covered. Iv also now just engraved the frame and seat post, and now also remove my lights and computer.

knowing zip about bike and frames... is there such a thing as a gps and battery that would slide inside a frame somewhere?
how would you recharge it?
but then obvious prevention measures are always better than tracking things down.

is it time for expensive bikes to be dressed up in sheep clothing..(looking like cheap kmart specials)

the bugga is cordless power tools, cut your way into/out of anything.
You obviously need preventative measures, the hospital would provide a lock up security shed ����������

If they're riding away with them, remove the seat and or front wheel. Makes them harder to sell for drug money too.

Does the building you work in have a secure bike lockup like a lot of the ones i did work in have? Or are you friendly on a professional level with the office facilities manager so they will let you store it in the office stationary room?

Take front wheel into work, i used to do that and all bikes around it would get stolen and mine never did. They are after a quick sale once stolen and having to find a new front wheel is not in their interest.

Yeah work has an awsome bike locker shed, security cameras, change rooms etc and all. Problem is all the baller bikes are in there too and the thieves know that, therefore it gets targeted MORE than the bikes parked outside in higher traffic areas. Problem is police have no time to chase them and they keep getting away with it, and returning!
Bringing the bike into my office etc is not an option unfortunately.
I have began to look into air tags etc.

Few options here that id suggest (taking front wheel is s good option) but they'd probably still take it for a laff.

Pretty sure pipe bombs are frowned upon. Plus, if a theif blows the bike up, then the bike is still exploded.

Talk to the Building manager, & ask for some More CCTV aimed at the Bike racks with prominent Signage..!!

Go to the Tip, buy crappy bike for $15, spend $50 on it buying puncture proof tubes, lock it up with the lock you have, the thief wont even look at it and steal someone else's bike, and even if they do steal it its only $65, a decent bike lock would cost way more.

I remember buying my son his first bike at 10, went out and bought him a $700 bike, it was gone within a week, I discussed with him that maybe a cheaper bike and a Xbox would be better and he agreed, he is 25 now and I threw the $20 Tip bike out for verge collection a few months ago after many years of him riding it everywhere, he still has the Xbox

HAHA Love it! Iv been riding to work and back since covid and not wanting to park my Typhoon in the city. I'm actually enjoying it alot. I only ride along the linear park here in Adelaide, and dont need to go on ANY road to get to it, so its very safe. I'm probably travelling approx 3000kms a year on the bike just to get t work and home. I know a cheap bike would be the go but I compromised with the Merida Speeder (just under $1000) as its light, comfortable and super fast. I wanted an E bike but probably glad i didnt go that way now as they are high targets, and plus im going pretty much max speed due to the busy nature of the bike paths anyway.

Im sure my bike hasn't been taken yet due to the 3x different types of locks i have on it.

A much better choice than a cheap bike if it's something you want to do often. Cheap bikes will quickly suck the joy out of riding.

Before my back injury I commuted to work (Woodcroft to mile end) and I was fortunate that I could store my bike inside the factory.

Due to this I don't actually own a lock but I think you are on the right path with having multiple locks and removing anything of value. It's frustrating for you but is probably why your bike remains not stolen. Theives are usually opportunistic or looking for something that's quick and simple.

Sorry to hear the police have been less than helpful. Adelaide probably has a higher percentage of cyclists than most other cities but also a higher amount of criminals targeting it.

Other than locking the bike inside your premises you going to be fair game, no one cares any more when stealing, they will do it under your nose, the low life's fear nothing and the law lets them off if they are caught.

Yeah quick release front and rear, but seat is fastened properly.

I bought one of these for my close to $2k electric bike many years ago. But they are heavy and chunky, about 4kg from memory. Not an issue for electric bike though

It'd take a while to cut through using portable tools I'd imagine.

Iv got the larger d lock version of this lock. Iv got the 14mm kryptonite evolution d lock. Takes a good thief around 13 seconds to grind through!! They will need to this twice though due to the way its made.. so 26seconds...

I made up a chain made from fork lift chain covered with a bike inner tube. Placing the padlock on the seat so it could be easily seen.
