Default The Nanny State thread

I thought that it would be a good idea to have a thread that highlights some of the ridiculous rules and regulations that are being imposed on us.

Please add links to news stories and government press releases that show stupid laws, OH&S rules and anything else designed to target the lowest common denominator.

Please leave political arguments out as the thread will be closed by mods.

Here’s a few to start with.

Speed limit reductions are rediculous!

Here on the Sunshine Coast on the stretch of Bruce Highway outside the Ettamogah Pub the Limit has been reduced from 110 to 100. and its only for this stretch.

Due to the fact the government force the builders of the Pub to make its Access points adequate. They deem the Exit dangerous and short.. which it is! so why not fix the exit!

Stupid Gumbyment bandaid fixes!

And while the world is starting to see us as a nanny state, they are probably starting to think we have no sence of humor....

Why don't they go and ban the internet, you can easily "accidentally" come across things worse than Zoo, Playboy and Penthouse.... Oh wait, I forgot they're already trying to censor the internet :

i would think we live in an arrogant state, not a nanny state
when i was a kid, the penthouses and playboys were towards the back of milk bars. there wasn't as many and we had to go out of our way to look at them and of course the owner would set us straight if we were looking. i guess the people complaining of these magazines feel that 12 year old girls wearing porn star t-shirt are inappropriate too. no doubt our aff members think that is ok. as well as make up, eating disorders etc. from such a young age

it is a horrible world we live in when smokers rights are violated to the point they cannot smoke on the street. how horrible for them, that since they were quite happy to violate my rights of fresh air, they now are the bad guys. boo hoo

these rules come in for one reason. because some of our perfect citizens take the current rules too far because they consider themselves more important than the next person. be it road, censorship, polluting air - if people had respect, then we would not be heading so fast into a nanny state. i say so fast, because although this will surprise many people here, but the nanny state rules have been happening ever since they stopped feeding christians to the lions at colliseum. i am sure some of the more wealthy people screamed nanny state or the equivalent when that happened. same as when traffic lights, car rego, pub closing times etc. etc. etc. were introduced. as always though this generation can only think of itself and believes it is the only one that has had rights taken away for whatever reasons

Well the thing that really p***** me off about our rights/priveleges being eroded is...what about all those that died fighting for us to keep them was it all in vain!

I bloody hope not. Its time for the silent majority to become the very vocal majority.

Have to agree..that is one dangerous on ramp. Too short, and for drivers traveling north, bugger all warning that it is all happening on their left.

Council here brought in new rules regarding buildings here a few years ago....

Just one of the many stupid rules is that you cant build a shed/ dewelling near a main sewer line. There is one here in the back yard. And the way they determine the "minimum" distance to build is to use the depth of the top of the sewer line and then using a 45% angle rising upwards from the top of the sewer line is the splay area you can build on.

The block of land here is a 1/4 acre and some 30m wide. Just think that the last 6meters of the whole yard YOU CANT BUILD ON!

But still the rates rise... and so does the land valuation by another 45%!

Nevermind the neighbour who build his shed just 12 months before the new rules. He built the shed 20cm from the rear fence and just 1m from the sewer line.

There is now a rule regarding building too close to the fence. 1.5m. Any closer and you need to apply for a permit. Which costs some $700. And then you need a letter from the neighbour stating they dont object. If they do you loose the $700.

Now bear this in mind....

ALL THE NEW HIGH DENSITY suburbs have homes/ garages closer then 1.5m!
This means the council RAKES IN MILLIONS in fees just to build close to the fence!!!!
:

oops ok.. keep away from politics... lol

Don't have a link, but the whole bunch of rules and regs of not being able to clear fallen branches and other fuel. Also not being able to cut trees down from around your house.

I’m pretty sure that some of these laws have been changed after the Black Saturday bushfires.

These laws were utter madness and defied any form of “common sense” unless you have a left handed, lesbian, albino yellow bellied lizard that may wand to build a nest in a dead tree branch.

There was one bloke who cleared the area around his house near Strathewen, however, he ended up with a big legal bill after fighting the council in court.

The irony was that his property was the only one that didn’t burn to the ground in his area. This was highlighted during the Bushfire Royal Commission.

I’ll try and find a link to the story.

Mo, I'm hoping everybody remembering our fallen next week won't be thinking they died to preserve our right to "smoke in the street". I have a feeling it was all about a little more than coming up with some rules and regulations that favoured more than just the minority of us.

I hate the fact that the world has gone health and safety mad as well as all the freedom encroaching.

We are no longer living in a world in which if a light bulb is blown you get a ladder and change it.
Now we sit down and have a meeting about it. Forget the ladder thats far to dangerous!!! You will need a cherry picker. Great, but hold on, you will also need a license to operate such machinery. You will also need a harness and be trained to work at heights. You will also be a qualified electrician before changing that bulb.

Now im all for keeping safe but nobody is allowed to use common sense any more.

On the subject of this, the old law of unintended consequences comes into play here.

They have changed the liquor licensing laws to try and stop some of the clowns who come out of nightclubs totally tanked turning up to the Anzac Day dawn service. Well what they didn’t think of is that many of the veterans try and get together before the march and have a quiet one at Young and Jackson’s. It’s been a tradition for many of the fellas for years. Well now that Y and J’s can’t open before 2:00 PM (I think) these fellas can’t have their little get together.

All because of some moron in Spring Street who knows what’s best for them.

You forgot about your reflective safety vest, you can‘t go anywhere without one of those these days. At our depot, not only do you have to have your vest on “before” you get out of you car, it must be zipped up all the way, because if it isn’t, it’s not “technically” a safety vest and you could suffer from instant death.

What’s really stupid is that they even make the sheilas in the office wear them even though many will never set foot inside the warehouse or the yard.

Certain foods can't be placed in their traditional spots in supermarkets due to their ' high sugar content '.. because some people need a whole 30ft spacing to tell them not to eat a lot of said items. Chocolate bars, chips, etc are shrinking, again because said persons can't say ' no '. They may not be fines or infringements but it's another case of someone else telling the majority whats right and wrong, because of the actions of a few excessively hungry people.
