ok so it says to use 5w - 30w for the engine, but cant seem to find n e thing less then 10w - 30/40.
a few questions 2 differnce between synthetic and full synthetic? 5w - 30w <<---- whats it actuall mean? is it the thinkness of the oil as well as temps its ideal at? i can see this getting outta hand with people commenting on what oil and stuff they use so would be good if someon could help sooner then later lol cheers Brad` |

Why don't you use the oil recommended for it which is available from ford over the counter at you Ford spare centre! Its price is comparable to retail of any auto shop! and it is from Ford, suitable, and made by a reputable oil manufacturer, just re branded as Ford!

for starters the 5, 10, 15 etc and the front means the starting thickness of the oil ie 5 is thin where 15 is thicker. the "5w" means at room temp or "cold" in engine it performs like a 5w oil, the "-30" means when hot or at operating temp it performs like a hot 30w oil hence "multigrade" if that makes sense.

Ford service often use Castrol mangatec (15w/40).

You will find 5w30 is only on the AU1, 2&3's say 10w30. Exact same engine so it doesnt matter at all.
First number: Oil viscousity at cold Second number: Oil viscousity at operating temperature Higher is greater viscousity. Thicker oils should be used for loose tolerances (ie: old or high mileage) and hotter conditions, so that way the oil doesnt break up. 10w30 dino oil is fine, unless its made by Castrol. Synthetic is completely unecessary on an engine like this. So you will only suceed in wasting your money. |
