hey guys..
was sprucing up the ute, giving her a clean and fixing this and that... anyways i wanna replace the manual gear lever bush as my box feels sloppy and i can hear the bush rattling as i rev out the 8... but ive found this box assembly to be quite different from my past vehicle... heres what im looking at currently. is it possible to access further than this from in cabin, or am i required to get underneath the vehicle? seems pretty excessive just to change a plastic bush. thanks fellas. |

oh and if it is a bit more in depth.. is there a write up i havent found... ive done some searching, but nothings turned up.

Have a look and read through this thread mate. I am pretty sure you will find the exact same problem as described here. I get the feeling this is not un common.

Cut the bush out and bolt it back together. I have done this a few times and it improves shift quality markedly.

Yes you have to get under the ute and no you dont have to remove the gearbox!

bush was 20 bucks. (rip)
so i got the 4 bolts off from underneath then the 4 top case bolts of the t5 borg warner had to come off.. pity two are hidden by the goddamn trans tunnel, and i dont have any flexy spanners. why make life easy. |

You have a standard shifter in yours, spanner will get in there no probs! try doing it with an aftermarket short throw shifter!
Spanner should be no worries, you would have nearly an inch from the bolt to the trans tunnel, if your struggling still do it from underneath, just like you did the shifer surround. |

I just bought an XR6 Ute that has the same sloppy gear stick problem. Thanks for the info, should make it a bit easier to fix on the weekend.

currently using it still.. though its quite tight. i want to replace it to black anyway. it looks rather yuck in elephant grey imo. i guess you could try removing the foam insert, that may make it easier.

Also remove the rubber bush bettween the selector and the acctual gearstick, for a more responsive feel. However will have driveline vibration resonance through gearstick, if this bothers u don't remove the rubber bush....... Later.........

I suppose you could do it with the gear box in the car by lowering the gearbox at the rear to give some extra room and going in from the inside of the car but i would imagine it to be very difficult. Someone else may have attempted this and therefore have a better idea if it is able to be done or not.

In the second photo you can see at the top there is a small round hole in the block this is the pin that needs to be 'tapped' out according to a book from the library on rebuilding a T5. Another way to firm up your shifts is to get rid of the rubber block on the end of the stick.
Get yourself two Poly Sway bar bush's, cut them down to fit into the holes in the bottom of the stick. I also swapped the stick to the drivers side of the shifter. The poly bush's firmed up the stick but will still isolate some of the vibrations. Cheap worthwhile mod. Not quite as good as my old short shifter but a bit more friendly around town. Anyone after a T5 SVO short shifter?

Ive got this short shifter, then a pic with that little extension thing and one with out. I also bought a shifter bush and tried to change it, but couldnt get the old one out (didnt realise you had to actually cut it out) so i didnt bother.

Which one works better Antwon, the longer or the shorter? The shorter certainly looks better. How much did that one cost? Also, how much of a shorter throw over stock do you think the new shifter gives?

They both 'work' the same, the longer one is brought back more which means if you have your arm resting on the console lid, its right under your hand, where as you have to reach forward a touch for the other one.
The shorter one does look better, because of the way the spacer thing is, when the spacer thing is in, because of the way its shaped it looks really unco when in gear. And the throw - comparing the stock one to the shorter one, its probably about half! I bought it from america, after the exchange rate and postage it came to $130.
