Default CAI, such a massive sound difference?!

I just got 2 products from SS Inductions installed, the big mouth and growler kit. During normal driving you can hear it quite well and it sounds nice but if you give it a boot it is so loud in fact it hits you in the chest, actually vibrates the interior of the car!

After reading everything I have on the web about how CAI is a waste of money over stock and it doesn't improve perf or change the sound much I had low expectations but this is a massive difference. In the cabin it sounds like it is coming from the front but having a friend stand outside he says it sounds like "it goes right down to the exhaust". I was so shocked by the difference I thought they "accidently" installed a different exhaust or something was wrong. I actually looked to see if the exhaust had anything done to it. Sounds incredible! Anyone else have such good experiences with aftermarket air intakes?

yep its more the pod filter than anything..threw one of them on my old AU and it sounded tough with the stock exhaust. went to a panel filter after that and nothing.

Ive got just the growler in mine, picks up a nice hissing sound through the pod at about 3000+rpm, that with the cat/back ive got and its not a bad sound for an n/a.
Clearly gained a few extra rwkw and response as well. good little mod i reckon

I got it done at midland mufflers and one of the blokes there said it was the best his heard. Sounds like a "true sports exhaust". Supposedly the big mouth kit with the growler made the massive difference. I wanting to be different went with both haha, no one else had but I definitely recommend it!

Now just to finish the rest of my intake mods, I don't want a single stock item on the intake :P

If you think that is loud, wait until you hear a turbo side intake

I bought an AU111 XR6 manual HP about 18 months ago. Car was stock except for CAI SS big mouth. Man that car had some beautiful induction roar to it. Enjoyed the trip back home from Ipswitch.

One of the few mods I did to it when I got back to Darwin was to fit a set of Pacey 4480's, 100 cell cat and a lukey 2.5 inch sports system. I no longer have that beautiful induction roar. What I do have though is one of the sweetest sounding cars I have ever owned in 41 years of driving.

Try a Bluepower CAI, then you'll know what induction noise is!

This.
I have an intake that goes from Turbo over cam cover to a K&N behind left hand foglight and the noise is awesome, just feather the throttle and you can hear the Turbo

Seems that CAI's are underrated then :P My average fuel economy increased o.O Was sitting at 11.6 for some time and I knew it would go down from the recent spirited driving to hear the new intake, but it went up! =O Now sitting at 11.5, if I drive normally again it might keep increasing =D

Whats the biggest pod that will fit in standard bf xr6 boxes? Keen to do a few experiments!

Sounds like a need to fit a pod filter to my ute, and it is surprising how good an induction system sounds

I wouldn't know but why use the stock airbox? It would be best to get a larger filter with airbox to a large duct rather then use the stock airbox with the biggest filter you could find. Did you just want to find out the difference between larger filters?

I want to find the difference between the filters. And I have a huge snorkel on the front, much bigger than the Typhoon one. There is a lot of air coming in, I just want to see what gains I might get or lose with a pod.

I also want to see how it goes if I remove the bottom/top of the airbox leaving the other half. Like I said, I've got a few experiments to do.

Fair enough, good to see if you can squeeze a bit more power out with a few adjustments.

Oh and this is the crappy vid I made of the sound from the exhaust, doesn't do it justice but have a look if you guys like.

Here is mine, was recorded with my phone so footage is abit wonky from the mount. You can hear the intake but it doesnt do it justice.

I don't understand how a more efficient filter would make a difference for a turbo... Doesn't it always maintain the same amount of boost, or am I missing something?

Rubbish. A filter alone no, but a decent CAI will, i know the intake on my car is good for 10-15hp atw.

Nice post edit

I've got a foam pod filter on my TDCI Focus, induction noise is really loud inside the car, but its covered with a carbon fibre cover so it dulls it a bit.

I've driven it without the cover and filter before when they fell off because the hose clamps came lose.

It was extremely loud.

Ahh so i am missing something, perhaps more reliable info. It sucks that you get such conflicting views on the web. After watching that vid with dyno tests on CAI with turbo cars it seems that you get NO difference, nothing at all.

CAI's generally can give better low down response. But it will depend on the car's ECU as to how it adjust the fuel for the extra air that's now being sucked in.

You'll have to try it and see how it goes. On my old 99 WRX, the CAI made a huge difference down low (and midrange) but yet on my wife's 01 WRX it makes no difference in power. But fuel consumption increased and there's more noise. The later ECU adjust the AFR's to 'fix' the fault of the added air.

I had a custom carbon fibre air box with a green cotton cone filter inside it on the 2.0 in my old ClioSport 182 Cup, after which it howled like a banshee, and produced the most wonderful deep and rich sonorous mechanical howl. Like a cross between an M3 e46 and a howling animal of some description.

Best sounding 4 IMO.
