Hey folks, what is their out their that people are using that is easily downloaded off the net, free :
I tried using Virus Rescue which worked great, got it through the windows security troubleshooting guide. Went through all the files and found some pop up type viruses which I have been copping lately, thing is though is that it went through the process and then right at the end asked me for money. It goes right to the clean up window, but when you hit the clean button thats when it tells you that you have to buy it first, what a waste 30 mins, not impressed. So ye is their anything out their that i can download for this. Thank in advance Stef

Best I use for free isnt one you download as such, but its a free online scan.
www.trendmicro.com use their Housecall program. Also to stop alot of the crap download Zone Alarm personal firewall, its much better than windows and for free its not to bad and quite easy to use.

AVG Free. Can be downloaded from http://free.grisoft.com
Always set up AVG on all my PC's plus anyone elses that I can get my hands on so I don't have to worry about virus infected PC's and having to clean them up after people.

Here is a good website to check how secure your computer is.
https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 Shields Up. Quite a good site. I tested the home PC, and it came back fine, with Norton Installed. Cheers Darran

AVG is one of the best i heard NOD32 is ok DONT use vet (its crap) DONT use norton either (its crap) and expensive if you dont know how to use a computer properly dont use zone alarm or blackICE they make life soo much harder. use ad aware and/or spybot for spyware/malicousware stuff

Yeah Norton is a major systems resources killer. Apparently they haven't changed their architecture much since Windows 95 and have just kept adding stuff and protection to it instead of redesigning it.
AVG Free is just as good but doesn't hog resources. Its actually better because its free! NOD32 is ok, great thing about it is that it uses almost no system resources. |

stay along way away from norton, i found it to be worse than a virus and it was prompty deleted as soon as its subscription ran out.
i use VET antivirus on all 3 of our computers and it seems pretty good to me and reasonably priced

I use spyware doctor. It is worth spending a few dollars to have your computer protected. I have it set up so that the new data bases are updated every night at 3am. Never had any virus problems at all.

I'm using AVG...Ad-aware...Spybot s&d and a real time prog which you get one month free trial..then it stops upgrading..unless you pay an annual fee of $50.00.
All are good but I wont be paying $50 for the real time its already protecting against 500.000 items. Forgot to say the real time is called Ewido.

I used to work for a computer busines, repairing and trouble shooting sick computers.
Nortons is the no.1 killer of computers. It is heavily reliant on the computers resources and as the computer dates, the uploads just kill it over time. Closely followed by Trendmicro/PCcillon & McAfee is known to use a lot of resources but not as fatal nas Nortons. I have been using VET for the last 6-7 years or so along with many friends and clients and never had an issue. AVG is about the best free antivirus around.

Like many others, I suggest AVG.
Also echoing comments of others, Norton was proven in a test to reduce the performance on windows on a test computer by something like 60%

AVG , Ad-Aware SE Personal & also "toniarts - Easy-Cleaner" (worth looking at). Set AVG to auto update Daily . I've never had any problems.
I've just cleaned up a friends computer who hadn't done an update for 7 months . there was 6547 viruses on it (virus vault was full , 5G worth) ....nearly all in "Zip" files . Best to scan them before unzipping.

Download, install and then update these, it's all you need on any home system, and dont forget to use Microsoft Update to download/install critical updates, and remember any antivirus software is only as good as the latest .dat files release, ie: if your running old .dat files, even a couple of weeks old you are not protected, simple as that.

I've got Trend Micro PcCillin Internet Security 2006, plus Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and Adaware. Also make sure you regularly download the updates for your computer. I've never had a virus since having all these products installed.
