Default 2010 FG XR6 Write off, Questions. =(

Hi Guys,

I got in a nasty accident last weekend and I was so shocked by it all I told the police "You hear that?! The Engine still starts, i'll just get a wheel alignment and be on my way home". Well, after finally getting home and speaking with AAMI it seems the car may be a total loss.

This begs the question of, if it is a total loss why did the air bags not deploy? The impact was enough to destroy my phone, I and the passenger were ok because the seat belts kept us away from the interior but "what if?" What if my head did hit the steering wheel, no air bag could have been fatal, or an air bag may have been fatal, not sure. None of us are injured so they were wise to not deploy or were they? :/

Another question is, I installed a 4.5k stereo, the stereo is of no concern to me but being that I didn't add it to the policy and I have added sound deadner to panels of the car will AAMI go, "Oh you installed a stereo without telling us eh? NO INSURANCE FOR YOU SIR!"

Opinions gentlemen?

The airbags didnt deploy as they werent needed. They would have caused more damage then they would have stopped. Be thankfull they didnt go off.

Yes, you should have told AAMI about the stereo. If it's damaged it sounds like you've lost your investment.

AAMI seem to love writing cars off, even if it's a $10k fix...

If your sound system wasn't on your policy, then you are entitled to retrieve it.. Same with wheels...

I understand that the stereo will not be insured but that can't on its own void the car's insurance can it?

More than likely the stereo will be fine, just like the passangers of the car they have been protected from impact.

I remember looking back at the 1600w monoblock and 2 L7s, they didn't even feel the impact.

I'm happy everyones ok, cars are worthless on the scheme of things, still wish the taxi didn't hit me =(

My advice remove your stereo or you will lose it when you hand the keys over.I doubt you will be refused payment unless you try and commit Fraud.

The car could have major geometry issues on top of structural damage in that case the car will be nothing but a time waster and money pit for the insurance company on comebacks from the customer. The steel used in modern cars is of high strength steel and is harder to repair.

With the sound system

They can only deny the claim if the sound system contributed to the accident, which is very unlikely. My advice would be take the Stereo out replace with original components or replace with cheap ones.

Eh, too late for that. They already got the car, and it has been initially assessed and even went to the auction site to be assessed again before a final verdit is drawn.

The stereo can stay out on the new car, I don't really feel like putting it back in. Might go for more elite parts. My original stereo was much better, but rather then spending the bulk of my money on SPL subs, I will go for elite splits and subs. Perhaps 1k just for the splits?

I'll work it out anyway.

Monash Uni release results yearly on car crash statistics. Data has been collected on 4 million accidents over 30 years.

The FG Falcon is the safest car ever sold in Australia was the conclusion. Sounds like it most likely saved your life. I'd be buying another one if I were you

Thanks xisled, i'll keep that in mind. It sucks to have such an expensive car crashed. Fortunately I have an 08 Accord Euro as well, helps a lot!

Oh definitely phillyc!

The FG is an amazingly safe car, the crash despite destroying my baby safed my life and was very comftorble to, it may have been hit side on at 60ks and through a give way sign but it kept its occupents safe =)

AAMI has a policy that if your car is under 2 years old it gets replaced with a brand new one. I will be getting an FG MK2 i'd imagine. Can't wait to be reunited with that beautiful work of art, and the colour was amazing! The exact same as yours =)

I keep getting told "it's a gray area" but IMO it isn't. I failed to see the taxi and got delt with accordingly. It doesn't matter how quick the taxi entered the roundabout, it doesn't matter that I was already passed the first exit when he "turned" into me.

I admitted fault right there and perhaps I shouldn't have but if I was in his position I would be pretty peeved off if someone said "He was driving too quick in the roundabout and turned into me". Most likely he hadn't seen me either, or he turned in a failed attempt to dodge me, either way someone could have died.

Good to see no one was hurt and the safety features of the car worked perfectly.

Do not worry your self about who is at fault or not, let the insurance company work that out, that is what you pay your policy for. The main thing is, you and everyone else is still here.

9/10 it takes 2 people either not doing the right thing or paying attention for a 2 car collision to occur.

Hopefully you both learned something from the experience.

If the stereo was not part of the policy it is yours. Go and get it. If it wasn't part of the policy and it was stolen, they probably wouldn't replace it with the same one, just a standard one.

You sound like a nice chap. Never admit liability though, especially on the internet.

I hope everything goes OK for you.

Yes that is correct! I have definitely came out of this for the best. It took a bit to start driving again but I do so with extreme caution. Back to the books with driving from now on. Look out for hazards, identify the hazards and react accordingly. No sitting comfy like i'm on the couch!

As for admitting liability, what difference does it make? I already got the ticket for failing to giveway :/ The insurance knows so the internet won't mind.

If you read your policy, you are not to admit fault.
The insurance company and the police determine that...

I had an accident 2 years ago in my BF XR6 Turbo. I hit a tree at 72kms while making the stupid mistake of trying to dodge a Kangaroo on a Highway (in hindsight i should of just hit it).

The DMG was huge, the motor was pretty much all rolled up. The dash in the car had rolled downwards and was pointing at my ankles. The steering wheel was all bent from my impact with it (so im told, i dont remember that bit). The car from the outside looked like you typical horse shoe from the impact on the front

When police arrived on the scene they refused to believe i was driving the car, as there was soo much dmg and where the dash was I "should either be dead, or have 2 broken legs". This resulted in a 6 week forensic investigation as i "was covering up for someone else". - Anyway thats another story to which i was innocent mind you lol.

The point is, my AIRBAGS did NOT go off either. I called Ford and they told me they would speak to my insurance company and "investigate". I did hear back from them almost 5 weeks later and i was told that from the pictures they received from NRMA it looked like where i had hit the tree (towards the inside of the headlight but not in the middle of the car) there is no airbag sensors!

Dunno how they build the BF / BA models, but thats one of the main contributing factors as to why Id never buy an aussie car again. But that is MY views.

Maybe I'm missing something here & can't exactly picture the scene (somethings missing)?

What was that about admitting fault?

"I keep getting told "it's a gray area" but IMO it isn't. I failed to see the taxi and got delt with accordingly. It doesn't matter how quick the taxi entered the roundabout, it doesn't matter that I was already passed the first exit when he "turned" into me.

You also said you got a ticket for not giving way. You were both on the roundabout & you were past the first exit when he hit you (turned into you)?
Who was on the roundabout first, even if it was only the front wheels? Forget his speed & that he was on your right (assuming), if you had entered the roundabout first he should've given way to you, even if he was going faster than you & you both got to the same spot at the same time. It's a common misconception that you have to give way to traffic on your right when entering or on a roundabout. If you entered first, you had right of way, you shouldn't have got a ticket & not even considered at fault.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that airbags are triggered by the massive deceleration of a crash, so it doesn’t matter where the point of impact is. If that's the case, your car had a fault in its system.

Pleased to hear that no one was injured in the crash, proving who's at fault in a roundabout is a tricky one but since they brought in the new ruling about giving way to your right, then if the taxi was on your right and the damage is to the drivers side of your car then I'd say that you will most likely be seen as being at fault regardless, but at the same time you should NEVER admit fault in any accident, that's the way the insurance system works and if you look through the fine print on your insurance policy it will advise you of that somewhere there in writing. As far as the stereo and other accessories that are fitted to any vehicle are concerned, from my own experience in the past AFAIK unless you tell the insurance company and have these extra things added to your policy and the agreed value is adjusted to compensate their value, then I'm sorry to say that they are history once the vehicle has been assessed. There are a couple of lessons to heed here, NEVER admit fault at the scene of an accident, and ALWAYS make sure your insurance policy covers all your added extras (including engine modifications if they are allowed under the policy) Do your homework first

Russ,
There is no new rule, & has never been a rule about giving way to your right on a roundabout. Cars are generally on your right at a roundabout, but nowhere is it mentioned to give way to your right, (roundabout rules differ from general road rules), you have to give way to vehicles already on the roundabout, whether they are on your right, left or in front of you. If they're on the roundabout & were there before you, you have to give way to them. It sounds to me in the OP's case, he was on the roundabout first?
This is taken off the NSW Roads & Maritime web site under roundabouts, rules are the same in all states. Important part highlighted in Purple & underlined.
Giving way
Slow down as you approach a roundabout. You must give way to traffic already on the roundabout if there is a risk of collision. Enter the roundabout when there is a safe gap in the traffic.

George,
Not much you can do now, just hope your insurance finds you not at fault & the other insurance company doesn't know/insist you claimed at fault at the scene, then fight the fine.
