Removing old bubbled window tint from BAXR6T rear glass?

Heys guys i got stuck into to my new project today but when it came to the really badly bubbled up rear glass tinting all i could seem to do was very slowly pick the tint off in small areas.

Its going to take hours doing it this way.

I'm trying to get this done myself without damaging the rear demister wires aswell then i'll get some new tint fitted before RWC is done.

Does anyone know a good trick for removing old window tint???

I was thinking maybe a heat gun which I do have an old one laying around???

When I had some old tint removed by a specialist, he used steam then it scraped off reasonably easy.

O.k well thats great cos my dad recently bought a little Karcher steam thingy cleaning machine so i'll give that a try.

That makes sense actually cos the glue on the back of the tint needs to get soft again before removing the tint.

Then i'll try and remove excess glue with Metho or Turps or something???

Tmrws gunna be another busy big one.

Yeah you need to get heat into it. Heat gun, steamer, hair dryer should do the trick. Helps if you have someone doing it on the outside while you pull it off.

When it’s really cactus I’ve used cardboard boxes cut into sheet for masking, multiple layers of them, and methylene chloride stripper. Then meths and paper towels to clean up. Final clean of the glass with carby cleaner, it seems to remove residue effectively.

Don't forget to put down lots of towels so your carpet and upholstery doesn't get wet.

Did this about 6 months ago on my EB. Just get or borrow a $50 clothing steamer from K-mart and a few wide razor blades to scrape the excess glue off. **** easy really, took me about 20mins per window. Gotta keep the steamer on the window to loosen the glue up as much as possible, not tear the tint as you pull it and you want most of it to come off onto the tint and not stay on the window

Don't use metho or turps for the excess glue. Not good for the plastics, stinks the car out etc. Just keep the glue hot and soft and scrape off as much of it as as possible then give it a wipe over with a little general purpose cleaner and a rag.

On the back window you want it extra hot and do it very slowly and carefully so you don't **** up the demister. Run the demister for a while to heat them up, should make it a little easier to get the glue off of them and Use a plastic scraper if need be

Ran out of time today but thanks these are all really important points and good ideas to not damage the demister wiring.

Hire a Wallpaper steamer/stripper from Bunnings if they still do them

A stanley knife blade holder hand scraper and Goof Off did some of the job today.

About $22 total at Mitre 10.

Thers actually 2 layers....The factory original, then the aftermarket.

AFter scraping most of the glue off with the scraper the Goof Off works great when applied and wipe off the excess glue with a clean rag.

Gotta do left rear door tmrw, then slowly, slowly do the whole back window without damaging demister wiring!!!

Its gunna take a few hours...

Just wondering....My brother suggested yesterday...Why not just get a whole Excellent Condition rear window from wreckers and get panel beater to fit it when getting paint job done???

Removing the old tint is going to a PITA!!!!

How much would wreckers want for a good rear BA-BF window???

Eucalyptus oil gets the glue residue off really well - well it did for me anyway.
Didn't hurt the demister wiring either.

I removed the rear tint on my old BF wagon, came off reasonably easy, but as mentioned use towels.

Unfortunately, I’d love to share my method but I got it off google, and I’d hate to break your no google rule.

Spoke to my wrecker today and thers NO rear windows cos they all get broken when wreckeing the cars.

He reckons he's got a mobile tint guy in the area that removed and replaced his BF sedan tint so ill be dropping in tomorrow after work to get a new jack and handle cheap and i'll also get this mobile guys number and enquire with him.

Let me guess....You used VERY HOT water on a towel to make the tint and glue soft again so you can peel it off???

How much does a screen fitter charge to cut out the back glass? If you ideally need it out for repairs definitely go for two wins in one.
