Got a 95 futura pretty good nick for $3500 a few months ago. 120,000 ks auto.
Theres a noise that sounds like its a wheel bearing that needs replacement as it changes frequency when i speed up, it is more noticable just rolling allong at slow speeds. my boss races drag cars so he gave me some advice and said to jack it up and move the wheel around, if it can be moved side to side or makes clunking noises then its a bearing. i did this and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary. also lately ive noticed lately when i have the brakes on at the lights theres a vibration i can hear from the rear. i put the car in neutral and the noise stopped, it also stopped when i got moving again in drive. any advice on what these problems are and how much they are to get a mechanic to fix? and can i do it myself. (engineering exp on industrial stuff , but know nothing about cars). doesnt make noise when coasting allong, slowing down with brakes on. (just realised the other noise when stationary is the exhaust loose) cheers |

Might be wheel bearings or something like that. I would be really surprised to hear that a 120,000 k old EF has done a diff. If the diff is gone, either it has done a lot more k's or it has done some very hard k's. I bought my EF with 280,000 on the clock, I have done around 40-60,000 in it, I have given the diff an absolute hiding (3 engines, 2 autos then 2 five speeds). The diffe has enjoyed many a burnout and all I have done to it is replace the bearings in the axle.
I'd take it to a decent mechanic and see what he reckons.
