Ford built about 400 XY utes in a 4x4 configuration, trying to get a fleet sale to the army. I think Landrover got the contract instead.
I nearly bought one 20 years ago, but they didn't want to give me enough for my trade-in. I'm sure it had an XA dash installed from factory. I've seen a few wagons modified in the same way - I think they use Jeep running gear. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Holden had the Overlander a few years later. I think they're pretty cool.
I have a pic at home somewhere with an XB hardtop(from memory) on jacked up suspension with massive rims. I'll have to find it. It looks awesome.

These were more of an example of what Ford could do with their spare parts bins than an attempt to get into the new 4x4 scene, from memory they came out with the XA series so you could technically call them an XA not XY (hence the reference to the dash above).
I think that all the factory units were wagons as well, don't recall the utes but could be mistaken on that point, however those couple of pics are certainly nice looking units. |

The factory 4x4s were all utes built by the Brisbane factory. They were produced just on the XY/XA change over, I don't recall them having XA dashboards but I wouldn't be suprised. They used the normal 250ci I6, low comp?, while the 4wd system was shared with locally produced Jeeps at the time.

My girlfriends mother has owned this beast since new, its a 5L V8, basically running on a land cruiser 4wd wheelbase. Its not a Ford but I still thinks its pretty cool

That actually looks more like an Overlander conversion which was built off the standard chassis. Now pretty rare.

They were an XY, Ute, Jeep running gear and Ford developed 300 to get an Army contract. My brother brought one new in '71 or maybe '72. They had the 250 T head motor, and it was slanted off like the early Valiant slant 6's.
My brothers was a good unit and he flogged it off after 1,000,000 miles on his cattle station. Ford was unsuccessful in winning the Army contract and the army got the Series III to replace the series II's they had. |
