Default Head Working

Guy I'm new to this,.. so can someone help me out..

I just blow my head casket and need to put a new one in so while the head was off i was going to send it to a head place and get it ported or something.. is it worth doing.. as the only mods so far is a set of pacemakers 2 1/2" system and k&n pod filter..

is it worth it ..

what sort of money am i looking at..

what sort of power gain would i get from doing this

if the porting is matched to suit intake/cam/exhaust properly you should see a nice gain. Inlets arent toooooo bad unless your building a monster, but the exhaust ports definately could use the work. Maybe a good idea to source a AU XR6HP head? Im looking at doing this myself soon to the EL.

to really get the most from it you would want to up grade your cam as well, and also get the head matched ported to your inlet and exhaust manifold. the idea of portin if ya didnt know is to allow the air/fuel to flow in with less restriction allowing more to come in in the same time there fore more power so a cam would also allow more in by leavin the valves open longer so once again you get more. One other thing dont get your inlet side of your head polished, this will reduce the swirl action of the fuel and air reducing how well they mix causing an un even burn in the cylinder reducing power and raising emissions. What you want is kind of a controlled turbulance. well worth doin the portin tho.

I am going to put a wade cam in at the same time.. but really wanted to know what sort of power would be gained from doing a porting job on the head.. I have a friend who said he thinks it costs around $1500 but cann't be sure

It depends on the porting, as well as all the other things mentioned. A wade cam/decent extractor and exhaust combo with some intake mods and a half decent port should see you crack 140 odd rwkw. Everyone has different ways to go about porting, but i have seen blokes flow somewhere around 400hp starting with a AU head. The cost? Shop around. And ask the joint you choose what success they have had with a Falcon six head. better still, make sure they put it on a flow bench.

There was some time ago a big article on autospeed about a AU port job, you might wanna ask Karl, John or Jack if they have a copy of it...i know someone does (GM_detroyer was heavily involved with it)

420-460 is INSANE. Reasonably big porting efforts see arround 380bhp flow. Converting 10" H2O to 28" of H2O isnt as simple as multiplying by the root of the diffrence. Stock heads usualy dont flow arround 330bhp anyway. Stock ED XR6 heads flow 320/330 bhp, with stock AU heads flowing arround 260bhp, with a cleanup and a mild port on an AU head netting 330bhp flow. A sizeable port job on an EF head netts between 370 and 390bhp.
