Default Club plates in Vic

Was down in Vic over easter. What's with the brown club plates ? A Commodore Vacationer wagon running round with a family and full of groceries, a Nissan Skyline and a Commodore ute full of firewood !!! What special conditions are there to obtain one of these plates ?

Car has to be over 25 years old and the owner has to be a member of a Vicroads approved car club - basically that is it

They are required to complete a log book while more than 100 metres from home, and are limited to a maximum of 90 days driving

There are shonky people out there, many 25 year old vehicles wouldn't be deemed as ''classic" or "historic" but the rules are the rules, personally as the owner of a '66 XP Falcon Coupe I get a little ****ed off at the blatant abuse of the club rego scheme

Most of the governance of the club plate program is left to the car clubs themselves

That is why I was surprised Trev, the 3 vehicles I looked at were stock as a rock and certainly not "Classics"........

Only rule really is vehicle must be 25 years or older, have a full roady, fill out the log book and be a vic roads approved club member.

There is about to be a big clean up of the club rego scheme in Victoria. Some of the junk on H plates is a joke.

I thought about putting my old 1990 lexus ls400 on it, I don't know if you guys would call it a classic, but I think it is, the first model of the series and the most iconic imo, it only gets driven for less than half the year it's totally stock and is roadworthy.

Yes, the changes are now in force, but they wont stop the questionable cars from retaining their club plates, nor even new ones gaining club plates. All they do is ensure the cars are not greatly modified, and a proper RWC is obtained rather than a club official declaring it roadworthy when getting the plates.

Camper vans are a good example where they are only driven a limited number of days each year to go camping etc. so they suit the club plate scheme well. Ridiculous.

Cars now needing a full RWC will thin out new people taking advantage of the scheme a little. Our car club has been informed that Police will be doing more checks and issuing defects to any club plated cars driving on public roads that aren't roadworthy.

We have a cut off in SA of Jan 1979. Historic not available for anything built after that date for now. No scheme whatsoever for modified vehicles (currently under review) at the moment and no little brown plates signifying your a historic vehicle on conditional registration. It is a bloody good scheme that we jealously guard and respect. you can use your vehicle up to 90 times a year. Car basically has to be OEM.

Sounds like a better scheme than in Vic. Whats the cost per year?

If I had a classic car I'd doubt I'd have it on historic rego if it has to be OEM, all my cars are modified.

Just to put the 25 years in perspective, that is a EAII and a VN Commodore, certainly not classics in my opinion

It will be difficult to detect cars that really should be in the M class that are currently on H plates

The compulsory initial roadworthy only applies to vehicles new to the scheme

Qld Club rego still the old system, Drive 15km radius or designated location within reasonable distance, etc 200km, club need to be notified with letter. Best part we can run personalized number plates.

SR is for pre 1948 and M is for post 1948.

As far as I know, modifications for M are stuff that needs to be "Engineered" for regular Rego. This now covers Cars that have now been converted from Left Hand Drive to Right Hand Drive, even if otherwise stock.

True, but my understanding is it only takes one cop to "form a belief" that the car does not comply and defect it. The car owner will need a RWC to lift the defect.

Whether the cops or VicRoads notify the club concerned or not I don't know. What the impact is again, I don't know but what I do know is that CPS plated cars will be getting a lot more unwelcome attention.

There is a ruling that says that anything greater than a 30% increase in power puts the car into the M class, so if you are supposed to have a 170 and you have a 250 you are outside the rules and it needs to checked, by an engineer I think, bloody silly, that sort of upgrade is a straight swap.

Trevor I agree with you.
Why is it we have these ridiculous regulations though, like the 170 to 250 example you've pointed out, and how did we arrive at this situation with registration?

I'm left speechless when I travel to the U.S. and witness what they drive on the street straight out of the fairgrounds their shows are held at.
Blown, tubbed & injected. Yet our authorities are worried about a 170ci to 250ci swap.

Correct, though they are actually the same regulations you are supposed to follow for regular Rego.

US citizens have allot stronger voice then Australians so they have more acceptable rules.

If rego wasn't rapidly approaching $1000 per year I'm sure less people would do it, I've thought about putting the VL back on the road for that reason.

I think trev u will find this upgrade is totally legal if the 250 engine was an optional extra when the car was made and that u dont increase the 250 more than 30%. Another example is an 1969 xt falcon 6 cylinder can be upgraded to a 302 v8 which was an option as long as u also upgrade the front brakes to disc as v8 cares were, but a 351 was not available and this upgrade would be outside the 30% rule.

Excellent, so for example you could have an engine conversion without needing emisisons/engineers cert done like you would in a normal rego car?

Say 1960s car with LS3 or something.

no... M Plate cars are those cars that require an engineers certificate.
H plates are those that are modified within the guidelines that don't require a Engineers cert

I was going to get full rego on the XB I am building, but it's just too expencive for a car that will see the road a dozen times a year (same as my LTD).

Might have to look into club rego.
