I just did the head gasket on my AUII egas. The top end is noisey since even though the guy who checked my head said it was fine...
It's hard to tell if there is adequate oil getting up there, so I've only let it run a few minutes since starting it and hearing the noise. Is there a good way to be sure of that? If I have the filler cap off, should I be seeing oil splashing around in there somehow? How much oil is pushed up there, and how does it get up there? Thanks |

Is it making a clacking sound ... You may have a clogged lifter.
Is the idle a little on a rough side????

Seems to idle smoothly, but it does sound a little tractor-like... great description hey!

start it briefly with the rocker cover off you should see plenty of oil if all is well. what oil are you using? if you use oil that is too heavy you will get noisy lifters. the AU is quite sensitive to this and I use 5 W 30 to keep the lifters quiet even 10 W 40 gives a bit of lifter noise

AUII EGAS was 15W40 from factory ... never had an issue with noisy lifters either ... even with a reground cam and shimmed lifters.
They can get gummy deposits in them though. I'd give it a bit of time to settle down ... as it is has all just been pulled apart and put back together.

did the timing chain tensioner get set correctly when head replaced ? if not & too tight it will sound like a tractor till you stuff the oilpump drive or tensioner race, or in my case a long time ago seize the oilpump drive in the block

I just replaced the oil. I had to anyway cause the first lot was clearing out the 'milk'. The first oil I put in was a bit thicker, but this thinner stuff has made no difference.
As I went for a little drive it dawned on me that the sound I was hearing was exactly the same as when I discovered the milky stuff in the first instance... I'm not sure what to think now. I really don't know much about shafts going on in the head other than the inlet and exhaust valves opening and closing. I'll read up on what a lifter is. The noise is at the rear, so its not the timing chain itself, but I was a bit iffy about that tensioner mechanism. Last edited by parker; 19-09-2011 at 09:33 PM. |

I'm pretty sure au3xr6 is right - the original egassers came out with 15w40 caps then went to 10w30 caps
10w30 is way too thin for an egas - in sunny qld anyway.
