Holden to cut 170 jobs
Car maker Holden is to shed another 170 Adelaide workers because of dwindling car sales. The car maker will offer voluntary redundancies and reduce production to 400 vehicles per day. Holden said it in a statement it would work with its employees and their representatives to help them make informed decisions. In March, the company was promised a $275 million federal and state assistance package, to be delivered from 2016. One of Holden's major parts suppliers, aiAutomotive, stood down workers indefinitely this week because of financial problems. Holden had been increasing production shifts of recent times, after earlier abandoning the afternoon shift at its Elizabeth plant in northern Adelaide during a sales downturn. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-11-0...e-jobs/4350116

SA hasn't done too well in the last few days. Autodom has closed down its woodville factory (until who knows when), Hills industries today announced 300 jobs to go (half of those in SA), and now Holden has announced 170 jobs.

I reckon the 170 people who put their hand up for the package arent going to be too upset. Holden would have one of the best public service redundancy programs going around (they would be even better off than true public servants). Holden were a bit picky when they offered voluntary packages when they got rid of the night shift, but there were guys who were shy off a few years of retirement and were basically getting paid by Holden to take the next few years off (before drawing the pension). They wont have any trouble getting the 170 via voluntary nominations. |

This news does not surprise me. I was in the auto industry for two decades but was made redundant mid this year. The company I worked for had more than 2,000 employees at the turn of the century. Now they are half that and continuing to shrink.
People don't like bad news on this forum but there is nothing positive to say about the local manufacturing industry. Ford will go first when they cease local production in 2016. It may happen sooner if volumes continue to shrink. Anybody who thinks this won't happen is delusional. Toyota will be next likely to go if the high AUD keeps hurting their export sales. Altona exports 2/3 of its production. If they lose this it will be difficult to see Altona surviving just on 30 to 35 thousand local sales. Holden will be the last one standing as the government will not allow such an 'iconic' name to be lost to Australia. I expect them to become more of a CKD operation in future years. |

FFS, they have just announced the 2014 FU falcon, (FU may not be the real name, but appropriate) this will take them through to 2018 at least, with the 2014 falcon being a substancial upgrade and investment.

Having driven past Broadmeadows during the week, 7.15am past Ford, and seen the vast acerage of vacant carpark, things aren't going swingingly in the blue corner eather unfortunately. But we all know that, but are too frightened to say so for fear of being branded a hater, or should I call it a Frienemy....?
Thing is, these bulk lay offs are by nomeans the sum total of the blood being let throughout the industry. The unreplaced 'natural attrition', the constant, but lower volume leakage of staff - that by volume doesnt make news worthy content, continues week in, week out. Constant redundency programs on offer. Just quietly. To all those that have lost their career, and those that will lose theirs in the coming months / years my heart and best wishes go out to you all. Equal trade. Anti proctectionism. Governement federal / local purchasing strategy. All policy fail in my opinion. Cheap imports. Burn them all.

It all depends on govt. funding: the opposition continue to state funding will be slashed. I don't think many people realise that the Commodore and Falcon are tightly linked: when one is axed the other will follow soon after. If the Falcon is to survive, then the Commodore needs to as well. Interestingly, on the news the reasons given were dropping Commodore sales (obviously) but also plummeting Cruze sales... It seems Holden could only polish a Daewoo **** for so long before the public caught on... |

This topic has NOTHING to do with Ford.. Any post referring to Ford should be deleted!!
Stay on topic, it is about the poor 170 HOLDEN workers getting shetted. |

When will it end.
As a soon to be new parent, I fear for the future of my children. What will Australia be in 20 years time? Just a series of big holes in the ground i suspect.

I feel for them, but they will probably be volunteers anyway.
I'll know my fate on November 16. Wether I should show up for work on the following Monday or not. |

It would seem Holden have propped up Commodore sales artificially for so long.
Now that the inevitable is occurring, real decisions have to be made. No more registrations of 'new' cars from Holden, only those that need to be registered will make it to the final cut. Thus Commodore sales 'numbers' slipping from 1 to 3, to oblivion... |
