I just got my license earlier today, which was good for having 195 hours clocked up. I made a few mistakes and at the end, the tester wasn't too happy but I still passed. Anyways just about 15 minutes ago, I went for my first drive on my own and I accidentally ran over a cat :'( I'm already not having much luck.
It sat in the median strip of the main road, then run out in front just before I got there and it went under my front left wheel. It was a sickening feeling :(. |

congratulations on your license - pity about the cat, unfortunately it is always the best course of action to destroy an animal rather than swerve to avoid it & end up killing yourself against a tree or taking out someone else.

hard luck. just be grateful it wasn't a kid. don't let it knock your confidence too much. get back on the horse.
just a lesson in awareness. you have to keep your wits about you at all times and expect anything, esp when you see kids or animals near the road edge. |

Yeah congrats mate.
Not a great first drive, but like the others have said, better to run it over then serve, it was only a cat, but yeah, just remember to keep ya eye's on the road and your mind on the job and you will be right and not end up an unfortunate statistic.

Well done damo, I remember my first ever drive- broke the clutch in dads mondeo, ouch. Sorry to hear you hit the cat, but rather the cat than a young child.

Good work getting your P's and welcome to a new realm of freedom. That's a bit of tough luck about the cat, but it happens to alot of us (I hit a poor birdy once). Just consider yourself lucky it was a cat, not a kangaroo!

Congrats.. As for the cat dont beat yourself up to bad.. The first day I had my P's me and a few mates went lapping that night in the wet. A mate of mine in his new VP commodore overtook another mate and accidently rear ended her. Plenty of drama for my first day on the road but thankfully it wasnt me. Havent had a crash yet touch wood.
Another good mate of mine actually slid out on a dirt road and went head on into an embankment on his first day on his P's. Another mate also got bogged lol So could of been worse.. Happy travels on the road mate

Congrats on getting your Ps.
When I got mine, I made a mistake a day after getting it. Went through a red...never done it since. You get used to it. Just remember your lessons and don't think you know it all...we're all still learning...

I'm more concerned about you running over that cat, tbh. It's sad that people dismiss this so easily (yes, they die all the time, however, it's still extremely saddening for me to read about it). Still, congrats and wish you better luck in driving in the future. |

I didn't want to brake hard because it would cause some trouble for people behind me or swerve because I didn't really have anywhere to go besides into the gutter. Thanks for all the well wishing, I'm still not too confident behind the wheel on my own so for now I'm only going to cruise around my local area. Might explore my town a little bit, we've got lots of dirt roads and side streets which I've never been down.
Also, driving home from work tonight, nearly killed some bloody pidgeons who just escaped my windscreen... |

I've read with interest a few of your threads Damo, not sure I've always been a big fan, but it's great to see you got your licence, stay in tune with all the people here who can give you alot of good advice. Stay safe!

Congrats on your P's mate. Welcome to the wonderful world of driving :hihi:
Dont be too worried about the flat cat, ive never hit an animal *touch wood*. But these things happen. I still remember how good it felt to finally get out and drive on my own, dont let that mishap dampen your spirits |

With animals, just assume that if they are on one side of the road, they'll want to dash across to the other side just as you're driving past. Even if they are moving away from the road, some will turn and bolt back across it.
Congrats on getting your license. Don't go and do anything too silly on those dirt roads!
