what the hell

ive seen them shatter from people pouring hot water onto a frost covered window, but by the souds of it this has happened during the day!

any similar exploded windows in your street / area. could have been some kind of blast in your area that could do it

thats strange

I have seen this happen to a commodore. We were doing 100 clicks and it just exploded. No warning or anything. Probably due to the car twisting or something I guess.

Possibly exisiting chip/damage in the glass - this significantly weakens it.... My windscreen cracked just sitting in the driveway once... glass guy had a look and pointed out a small chip which looked pre-exisiting... sitting in the sun and the glass just gave up the ghost...

My dad's passenger rear window in his AU just cracked one day, but we traced that back to the tossers who didnt tint it properly a few days beforehand.

the "exploder" stigma has nothing to do with windows......and has everything to do with the firestone tyres they were fitted with which used to blow out

My sisters brand new focus had it's rear window explode a week after she picked it up.(About 12 months ago) Ford tried to say she had something to do with it ar first before admitting a few had done it in other countries and replaced it for free. The only problem was you can still see glass fragments throughout the carpets shelf etc that will never come out.

ИИИИ thats crazy.
My falcon sits out in the fresh air every day, and is always in the sun etc. Glad this hasnt happened to it, and hope it never does.
Though yes i have heard of front windscreens from a small chip getting huge cracks in them etc.
Though it looks as if there was excess pressure on the windscreen at either side the way it broke there.

Can be caused by leaving the rear demister accidentally on. Doesn't turn off like in other Fords

Speaking of little chips on the glass expanding, happened to my dads car. Driving back from sussex inlet after a couple days on the jetskis, had a rock flick up onto the glass, by the time i got home (2 hours later) there was a 15cm crack from the A-pillar heading into the centre of the windscreen. in about 2 weeks, it expanded to about 40cm.

That happened to my old Pulsar a couple of years ago, just came out one morning to find it all smashed. (You can see by this stage I had put a tarpaulin in there and started pushing the glass in.)

I figured it must have been the sun or something, either that or the kids next door threw something at it, but that didnt seem likely.

Anyway, I ended up replacing the whole back door with a nice red one to save having to put in new glass. The door only cost $60 so it was cheaper too.

I recall an issue to do with 'tempering' and 'content mix' of the glass. Not just cars, but microwaves, stoves, high rise windows etc.

Interested that tint?? seems to have held it together, if it so, tis one of the selling points - a laminate effect.

Good photo of the Festiva.

Sloth - looks deliberate.

Yep not just for holding it together but makes it easier to get out without leaving too many chards of glass in the trim carpet etc.
Had something hit a side window once, window stuffed but the tint held it together until i could get it replaced (organised for the retint the same day) but at least i did not get any glass in the car or over me.

Id say it wasnt after seeing this thread, if you read my post I said that I found it shattered and I put that hole there, as I had already started pushing the glass in before I took the photo.
As proof, you can see the pile of broken glass on the tarp I put in there to stop it speading all through the car.

I've seen this happen before ona a friends hyundai accent, it seems to be something to do with the temperature inside the car and the temperature out, if the outside is heating up quickly and the inside is still a bit cold or vice versa it could be similar to the reactions of hot water on a frosty screen

Driving home on cold morning rear demist on, BWANG goes the rear window, thought someone threw a rock at it. Continued driving home, got there shatterd window still intact. Called a windscreen guy to fix, when he got their he said the rear demist made a hot spot where the power cable connector meets the rear demist elements, and sometimes when u get a hotspot on a cold window this could happen. :yeees:
