Lights behind grill au2

Gday,

Might be a stupid idea, but i reckon a set of foggies behind the grill would look pretty sweet.

Has anybody done this or know even if its possible?

Ive had a look and it seems a couple of bolts through the grill pins (pin thingo's holding the grill onto the car) should work, as in using the pin holes to secure the light solidly to the car...if that makes sense.

Also restricting airflow and heat damage comes to mind.

Probably wouldn't let that much light through as the fins are pretty thick. Change to mesh and it would work i guess and still look half decent if done right.

What about down in the lower gap with rectangle lights ?

Well ive got a fairmont grill on so its the honeycomb mesh.

Id have put some in the lower gap but i was after something that looks alot better than the stockish positions.

It's possible I reckon, but not really practical IMO.

The effectiveness of the lights would be diminished and then you also have the reduced airflow to the radiator and condensor which may or may not cause a problem.

Fog lights need to be down as low as possible to work properly anyway.

Personally I think it would be like putting a set of 12 slotters on it and jacking the rear up with air shocks - very 70's.

I agree, but i was thinkin for it to be more for looks than practicallity which was the original idea.

With the airflow maybe removing the grill and puttin a pair in the gap but most likely look bad instead of what im after!

I still reckon just that woudl make it look that bit unique.

That grille was meshed, so let plenty of light through through. Had the same setup once I fitted an XR bar too and worked well enough, so the slats don't really block that much. In this position, they have to be high beams though, unless you point them right to the ground, but then they wouldn't be much use.

I mounted them on the radiator support panel (upside down), and turned the lens around so top was still the top.

If the lights are equal to or above the main lights of the car, then they have to be wired as high beams. Fog/driving lights can only be mounted lower than the main beams. Oh, and legally, you have to wire both to correct circuit and a switch.

Circuit goes like this:

High beam wire to switch (or parking circuit to switch for foggies/driving/daytime running lights)
Switch to pin 86 on relay
Lights to pin 87 on relay
Earth to pin 85 on relay
Battery to pin 30 on relay

Spotties on an XR are really only for looks/effect though, as the main high beam is excellent. The foggies are necessary for 3 months every year in Canberra (foggy mornings)

i've had blue parkers for ages and havn't been pulled up for em, the main lights do drown them out but if you see the lights at a certain angle then obviously the blue parkers stand out like dog balls.

how'd you go about gettin the flashing lights in the grill? just some led's and a flasher circuit?

I meant the light positions behind the grill.

The grill is also a great idea but if need be ill change it like yours.

Also, will having the lights on for a long period of time somehow kill the battery?
..thats what ive heard anyway.

Umm the ones that flash in the grill are LED's with a Intercanged box on them! I'll take some pics tomorrow for you. Got the whole system from Motoquipe. ... As for being able to see them, The main lights DO drone them out HOWEVER you can see them up close, but because they were parker replacment LED globes you can't turn them off when your beems are on. Although the police didn't say anything about them in RBT's but i DID however get in trouble for having the ones in the washed jets, APPARENTLY any lights above the headlights are illegal but he just told me to disconnect them so no big fuss really nice guy.

Beleive it or not that type of set up isn't as difficult as you think.

POELWYK would probably be using a Neon Strip light or LED which had been mounted in the grill. 1 Wire connects to the battery, the other goes through the whole in your firewall (just a rubber plug in the engine bay) which come out where the clutch would under your carpet. This is where you wire that wire to a switch and then the connect another wire to the switch and run it too a negative point in the car. And there you can turn them on and off from inside the car ;) ... It's a good effect for not a big effort. That was my original goal along side with the spotty's in the grill.
