Made in Korea I wonder?? Half of the worlds liners now float out of a dock in Sth Korea after being built. One every few days apparently.

Truly an engineering masterpiece!

Edit:Yup... Korean writing in one of the engine pics.

Nope, built in Denmark. And most large liners today are built in Italy. S Korea is a big builder of ships though.

Correct.

Wonder how / why the engine seems to be of Korean origin then? Even the wikipedia site for the engine makes no reference to the origin of the engine. Surely they wouldn't build the hull in one country and build the engine in another??

Or perhaps the engine pictures aren't correct for that particular ship?

Got to pull you up on the ship building bit however. Europe account for just under 6% of worlds ships, Korea account for just over 50%.. by a substantial margin.

the pics aren't even of the same engine lol
look at the stair cases, you can see differences, also one has a bit of white where as the other is green in the same area

(The ship was built at the Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark. In June 2006, during construction, welding work caused a fire within her superstructure.[7] It spread rapidly through the accommodation section and bridge.

Emma Mærsk was named in a ceremony on 12 August 2006. The ship is named after Emma Mærsk, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller's late wife. The ship set sail on her maiden voyage on 8 September 2006 )
The Emma Mærsk is powered by a Wärtsilä-Sulzer 14RTFLEX96-C engine, currently the world's largest single diesel unit, weighing 2,300 tons and capable of 109,000 horsepower (82 MW).[11] The ship has several features to protect the environment. This includes exhaust heat recovery and cogeneration. The exhaust gasses of the engine are passed through a steam generator which then powers electrical generators to generate electricity. This creates an electrical output equivalent to about 12% of the main engine power output. Some of this steam is also used directly as shipboard heat[12]. Instead of biocides, used by much of the industry to keep barnacles off of the hull, a special silicone-based paint is used.[3] This increases the ship's efficiency by reducing drag while also protecting the ocean from biocides that may leak. The silicone paint covering the part of the hull below the waterline is credited for lowering the water drag enough to save 1200 tons of fuel per year.)

Taken from wikepedia website, more amazing is the fact it cruises at 27knots

That open engine is an inline 10 cylinder - it's only got 10 throws. The other pics seem to be ones I've seen before of engines on test in a building. You don't have anywhere near that much space around an engine when it's in the ship- that'd be a waste of valuable cargo/fuel space.

Nonetheless, it's a massive ship. If that's one engine making 108,000hp then it'd be a Wartzila engine. It's the only one capable of such an output at the moment.

edit: damn too slow...

The engine would be low speed diesel so it would use straight oil, proper diesel is only used when it comes into port due to emission laws.

Watched the making of that ship on an Engineering Doco, interesting stuff. But from memory I think the Emma Maersk caught on fire, didn't destroy it, but a fair bit of damage.

They don't call the NRMA when the engine breaks down do they?? Tap the gigantic fuel tank with with his little hammer and say the 'fuel pumps stuffed, you'll need a tow' hahaha

But, really, its amazing that such a gigantic vessel could ever be created. Just amazing
