No such thing as a public bar I think. By public do you imply no one is an owner and attendees can do as they wish, how they wish? I guess it comes down to what the person paying the bills wants. If they want to charge then your options are to pay or not attend.

the owner has the right to charge as he sees fit. if you are talking a saturday night he would be paying for security to keep the morons in line. so don't complain about the publican complain about the drunken morons who create the need for security
and regardless if you like to hear it or not the fact is if your not happy with the charge you have the option of not paying by not going

The governmemt just charges for the licence to operate but the owner is free to charge what he wants including cover charges. it's government regs that make the cover charge happen as they enforce the need for security after a set time.

dont most only charge a cover charge after a certain time?

if so, just get there earlier. then you can spend 5 times as much on drinks.

I dont think people understand what the OP is trying to say.....

A "public bar" is a simple pub (in the classic sense).
Some of which have up to 4 doors to enter or exit.

A beer garden is a "seperate" outdoors area to a pub (tables and chairs)

Then of course there are namby "boutique bars"...

A nightclub bar is "a closed bar" (so to speak) and there is a cover charge to enter.

I have NEVER come across a public bar charging you enter the premises.
Even when these places have a band I have never seen a cover charge there.

Pubs with a beer garden attached will sometimes have a cover charge to enter the beer garden if there is a band playing in the beer garden.

Townsvilles Seaview Hotel is a good example.
It has a public bar at one end. free to enter.
pokie machines etc.

At the other end there is the beer garden, in the good old days there was a covercharge to enter that area when bands were playing.

Charging people to enter a "public bar" will put people off and drive customers away, its a good way to go broke.

Cover charges for "men only" and women are free to enter is also illegal and bars have been fined over it.

also to add the places is undergoing renos
its a bloody construction site
the beer garden was closed so no going there
at the end of the day i will not be going there ever again
so they have lost my business and those that will go with me to the pub
usually about 5 and we load up and spend $200 to $400 when we go out
im sure im not alone on this
and securty unless they are in plain clothes then they dont have any
