ax telstar noisy lifters

hi , i'm new to this forum just need a little advice in what to do about what i think are noisy lifters , i get so much diffrent advice from many people about the oil i should use , some say thicker and others thin , i currently have shell helix 20w50 in my engine and also added lifter cleaner , the noise is not has bad has it used to be but its still there , does anyone know what oil i should use to stop the noise completly or do i have to replace lifters , the car is 92 mod ax tx5 4 cyl, thanks in advance

Mate I used 10W-40 (Castrol GTX Magnatec or GTX3 I think it was) in my 1989 TX5. New oil and cleaner can only do so much and the noise comes back not too long after. I looked at getting some replaced but my mechanic said that as soon as you replace a few, you can bet the rest will go not long after and you'd have to pay labour again.

He said do the whole lot in one go or don't bother if you can deal with the noise as it's not worth the money and it was a lot of $$$ but not sure on exact cost.

I had the same oil you're using now and the Castrol stuff was better. So I went thinner.

Basically if you want the noise gone, in my experience you would have to replace them and unless you can do the labour yourself it's probably not worth it.

replace the lifters with new lifters and check to make sure oil is getting to them

with the colder weather warming up the engine will be required

Had tried thicker oil and replaced it because the lifter were making a noise. Changed to the thinner ones and the noise went away. Overhead cams do not like old oil either.

i think i might try somthing like 10w30 which brand i dont know , i was quated $30 a lifter plus $200 labor, if the 10 30 dont work then i'll go ahead with the job , thank you for your advice
