Smile Preventative maintenance AU1

Afternoon all,

First post and I'm sure this may of been answered on numerous threads so apologies in advance. I'd like some opinions on where to start if you where in my shoes in terms of what to start replacing now before they start to fail.

I've just bought my AU1 on 240k, one owner since new with full service history.

I will upload a running log he's followed to the T post the 3yr 100 000km warranty.

Your collective advice on what you would replace now would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Sam

Is it an 6 cyl or V8. Auto or manual?

As with any car that I buy, no matter the service history, I always do the following:
  • Oil and filter change
  • Coolant flush and new coolant. I also check the thermostat and radiator cap.
  • Flush brake fluid
  • Air filter
  • Fuel filter
  • Spark plugs
  • Check the leads
  • Drain and change diff oil
  • Transmission service (if auto), change gearbox oil if manual
  • Check brake pads and replace if needed
  • Check all steering components (ball joints, tie rod ends, bushes etc) and replace if needed
  • If it is a 6 cyl then check in the inlet manifold gasket is not leaking.

That would be a good start.

.. Sorry guys I have been trying to resize and change KBs on pictures to resize for the last hour and it's doing my head in!

The jumble of words is basically date service is done/what was done/kilometres it was done on (without a full stop.)

Hope you can help.

In that case have a look for any oil leaking from behind the power steering pump bracket. The timing chain tensioner seal leaking is a common problem but if you know what you are doing it is a reasonably easy job to fix.

Overall they are reasonably bullet proof but are starting to get on in age (some are now over 20 years old) so you just have to keep a close eye on things and stay on top of them.

I would do the fuel filter.... 45,000 kms from the looks of it if im looking at that list right.

Namely because if they block up the fuel pump can suffer.

Check ball joints, and check top ball joint bolt is torqued correctly.

pfft
I left my last AU sitting under a tree for almost a decade. Charged the battery, and away she went. Those things will "Outlast Religion".
I sold an Intech & BTR to a bloke whose original had done 300k, and he just wanted to put mine in his shed as a "spare".
Just a shame the styling gurus made em so bloody ugly.

Hold your tongue Crazy Dazz, they are a picture of beauty, I look at mine everytime I park it and think, Goddamn I love that car. My 3rd AU (about 8 weeks old) and finally a Xr6 Series 1 and I love it.
In regards the post, I had to change the infamous brake pedal switch (simple job), infamous thermostat (simple job), Brake rotors (simple job if handbrake isn't stuck on), had the auto trans serviced, Oil and filter, air filter and she runs like a gem. 208k so just under 10k a year which I think is pretty good. I'll be buried in this baby.
