Default calling au fan speed controller gurus

So i just put a new motorolla transister onto my speed controller to find that the fan still blows when the car is off.

only difference is now its flat out and i cant slow it down when the car is going.

when you look at the inside of it, there are the two metal ribbons soldered onto the legs of the motorolla transistor and a third one, that looks like a ground / earth.

should this earth to the body of the unit?? or go onto the screw that goes through the transistor, which would insulate it?

also, are these controllers available new or reco anywhere?

thanks

Yes; and the image here from the 1st thread probably answers the question.

You also need to use the proper transistor mounting kit to insulate the transistor from the metal case.

Also check you have not put the new transistor in back to front; it's actually easier to put it in that way than the right way but it won't work correctly.

No chance you have the base and emitter terminals mixed; it easy to as the solder connections are actually easier when you mistakenly cross them over.

Also check the fan/blower motor plug hasn't shorted. Follow the 2 wire cable from the fan speed controller to the fan and unplug the connection and check integrity of the plug and socket and inspect the inside of the plug and socket.

I assume you used a new mica or silicon rubber thermal washer and bolt insulation kit and heat sink/thermal grease (under the thermal washer) with the new transistor

These are also handy to stop the crap that fall in the vent corroding the transistor case:

it cant go the wrong way. the pins are offset from centre so it can only go the one way.

edit... oh you can mix it up on the inside though.... ill check that too

found the issue!!!

the smaller black transistor thing inside with the 3 legs, was missing a tiny little pad from under it which insulates it from the main body!

so easy to miss this. its about half a cm square and as thin as paper.

happy now!!
