Question Car Security - Blokesworld

Hey Guys, was watching an episode of Blokesworld a couple of weeks ago and they were talking about car security but mechanical side.

They were in the pub saying how if you remove a piece from under the bonnet (maybe something associated with the distributor?? im not sure..) it makes it impossible for a thief to steal your car. They may break into it, however the engine will not run. The part wasnt big at all...im pretty sure he was able to put it in his pocket??

Just out of curiosity I would really like to know what that part actually is....

Anyone have an idea??

Take the rotor off the distributor (under the cap), or you could take the lead that goes from the coil to the distributor off its usually quite short and can fit into your pair of 'stubbys' pockets or if your a metrosexual you could put it in your 'manbag'

yeah, your rotor button, or main lead, although main lead is a little too big.. maybe you can just offload the parts onto the mrs...

Yeah... I have considered this in the past but those of you who know where the dizzy is on an E-series (excluding the EF of course) will realise its a real bastard of a thing to get out.

Is there not an ignition relay under the bonnet? Maybe remove that instead.

Rotor Button..........

If you take the coil lead off if and they want to take the car they will just use one off the spark plug leads as a coli lead and run the car on one less cylinder

An old trick was to replace the central HT lead (king lead) that goes from the centre of the distributor to the coil with a piece of rubber hose of the same colour and diameter fitted with the correct rubber boots etc. Easy with the old EH Holden with black leads and an easily accessible coil and dizzy but with an E series coil under the inlet manifold etc it's a no go idea these days.

Maybe you could set up a system with a false battery lead.. just pop off the real one and put the fake one on rofl, confuse them for hours.

as a kid in sydney,we use to watch the same lady do this every day,monday to friday,for over five years.would be playing in the street,and she would calmly pop the hood,open the bag,fit it back,then she was on her way.never did get flogged,but heaps of others did.

The Poms were told to take out the rotor butten from their cars during WWII to stop German spies stealing cars, so its an oldies trick.

You guys shouldn't have said the rotor button so early, would've been funny reading what the younger forum users posted as clearly, by reading some replies, some have no clue in this world of coil packs etc..

i remember going into the valley one night.. many moons ago.. and my mate took ALL the leads off his V8 XY falcon.... then once finished.. he threw them all back on.. and we all proceeded to be young and stupid and raced our way from there back to sunnybank....

when we got back there... he said his car was running wierd... popped the hood and he'd forgotten one of the leads...heh.. funny thing was we were all driving imports.. and he still pants'd everyone...

Thanks for all your help guys, I asked the old man when I got home and he was quick to say it was the rotor button as well.

Wanted to know what it was because I have an XP Falcon. We were considering a fuel tap for security but that episode popped up in my head and thought that could be more cost effective haha. Also, until the XP is finished im driving around the old man's HR Ute (Dont worry, he has an XA Fairmont) so just wanted to make sure it wouldnt get nicked.

Heard the rotor button one before.

My brother put in 3 killswitches in his VH. He couldn't even start it let alone anyone else. A bit paranoid about a car thats not worth anything :

I got PIN code ignition in my car standard :

another one is to pull the coil lead off but leave it looking like its still on, car wont start but everything looks right

I have a vague recollection of someone flogging my fathers battery.
or do you pop the bonnet from inside?

Your correct. You dont need to get into the car at all.
