RIVIAN R1T ELECTRIC UTE REVEALED FOR LA

Deliveries of electric pickup truck scheduled to begin late in 2020.




The Rivian R1T electric ute has been unveiled ahead of its in-the-flesh debut at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show later this week.

Measuring 5475mm long, 2015mm wide and a riding on a 3075mm wheelbase, the R1T has been sized to compete with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500.

Three battery packs will offered with the R1T, with the 105kWh model promising a range of over 370km, the 135kWh version good for over 480km, and the top-shelf 180kWh model good for around 650km.



Each variant has an electric motor for each wheel. The entry-level 105kWh model has a total of 300kW/560Nm to its name, while the other two versions can boast up to 562kW/1120Nm.

Depending on the model, the 0-60mph standard can be dispatched in between 3.0 and 4.9 seconds. Top speed is said to be 201km/h.

According to the company, the R1T has payload rating of 800kg, can tow up to 5000kg, and ford water up to a metre deep. In off-road mode, the R1T has a ground clearance of 360mm, an approach angle of 34 degrees, a departure angle of 30 degrees, and a breakover angle of 26 degrees.



Riding on a skateboard chassis, the R1T seats up to five people, and has a number of storage areas in addition to the rear cargo tray. These include the 330L front trunk, a 350L "gear tunnel" behind the cabin, and a 200L sealed bin below the tray floor.

The cargo bed includes a tonneau cover, and three 110V electrical outlets. In addition to supporting fast charging, the R1T will also be available with camera, LIDAR, radar, high-precision GPS, and high-definition maps for Level 3 self-driving capability.

Rivian's stand at the Los Angeles show will not only feature the R1T pickup, but also the related R1S SUV, which is scheduled to be unveiled tomorrow.



The R1T and R1S will be produced at Mitsubishi's old factory in Normal, Illinois. Deliveries of the R1T truck are pencilled in for late 2020, with the R1S set to follow in early 2021.


Like Tesla, the Rivian will begin R1T production with the more expensive 135kWh and 180kWh models. The entry-level model is priced from US$69,000 ($95,000) before the US$7500 ($10,300) federal tax credit.

Orders can be placed now for a refundable US$1000 ($1380) deposit.

The styling is awful. One box sitting on a bigger box.
If they can seemingly do everything else right, why can't they get the styling right too?

Double the cost of an F150 Raptor.

Anyone know if the electric motors would be under any strain when towing 5 tonne. Or are they completely reliable and don't wear?

I don't know about that. Around $56000US for a Raptor aren't they? These start at $69000US ($61500US after rebates). An F150 Limited is $67000. So while expensive, it's not totally ludicrous depending on specs. Mind you there is no mention of price for the 180kWh version.

Doubtful, freight trains and some mining haul trucks have been using them for 50 years.

I'd be more concerned about taking something with that much electricity on board into water.

Electric motors last a very long time, and the electric vehicle would probably cost around 10c/ km to run compared to probably close to 30c/ km for the F150. So difference in fuel cost of about $50-75,000 over the life of the vehicle

Now I’m all for powerful vehicles, and I’m someone who is vocal about the Ranger Raptors undersized engine. But I have a curiosity here, in designing a Ute to do 0-100 in 3 seconds were they better off having it do, say, 0-100 in 5 seconds which is still lightening for a Ute, but maybe having twice the range?
I don’t totally understand electric powered vehicles, so maybe that’s not how it works, and if driven sensibly the range would be the same on a 3 second or 5 second Ute, possibly.

Agree.

Good idea .. but beaten to death with the ugly stick .. and I think an AMC Gremin isn't a bad looking car!

I'm always suspicious of computer rendered images though. They tend to be not much more truthful than the old stylised drawings American's used in the 60s/70s showing long, low cars which weren't that in reality.

Low 50k.

I did make the mistake of going off the Aus price for the R1T though. My bad. Didn't realise I wasn't comparing US $ with US $.

The 0-100 wouldn't be a design requirement but just the result of using motors that are powerful enough to tow 5t

The Rivian R1S has been unveiled ahead of its in-the-flesh debut tomorrow at the 2018 Los Angeles motor show.

Measuring 5040mm long, 2015mm wide, 1820mm tall, and riding on 3075mm wheelbase, the R1S is about the same size as the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Suburban's short wheelbase sibling, and significantly shorter from head to toe than the R1T ute, which it shares its skateboard chassis with.

Like the R1T, the R1S will be offered with three battery pack options. The base 105kWh model has a claimed range of over 385km, the 135kWh version is good for around 500km, and the top-shelf 180kWh model capable of about 660km.



Model for model, the SUV has about 15 kilometres more range than the equivalent ute. All models have an electric motor for each wheel, and a top speed of 201km/h.

Performance is unchanged, with the 300kW/560Nm base model capable of a 0-60mph time of 4.9s, and the higher capacity variants topping out at 562kW/1120Nm and a claimed 0-60mph time of 3.0s.

Compared to the R1T, the R1S has a significantly lower towing capacity of 3500kg, down from 5000kg.

The low- and mid-spec R1S has seating for seven over three rows, while the top-tier variant maxes out at five people.

The R1S will also be available with camera, LIDAR, radar, high-precision GPS, and high-definition maps for Level 3 self-driving capability.



Other features include over-the-air software updates, eight airbags, a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, 12.3-inch instrumentation screen, and a 6.8-inch touchscreen for the second row.

Rivian says the R1S can ford water up to a metre deep. In off-road mode, the R1S has an approach angle of 34 degrees, a departure angle of 30 degrees, and a breakover angle of 29 degrees.

Both Rivian models will be produced at Mitsubishi's old factory in Normal, Illinois. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in late 2020. Orders can be placed now via a refundable US$1000 ($1380) deposit.

The entry-level 105kWh model is priced from US$72,500 ($99,800) before the US$7500 ($10,300) federal tax credit. Only the more expensive 135kWh and 180kWh models will be produced initially.

The catch is the no-name brand and everything is unproven.

I actually don't mind the looks of either other than the front.

Front and side views look ugly, but the rear is not too bad, and that’s the angle most other drivers will be watching it from.

Looks like it’s designed by professors and nerds. The mechanicals and electronics look spot on, but I guess they didn’t see the need to hire any artsy people to tidy up the styling

The catch...

No specification on battery technology, depth of discharge, number of cycles. I would presume it uses hundreds of 18650 battery cells. What happens when a cell or a couple of dozen cells fail, how easily or not easily are these replaced, at what cost and can the average mechanic do this or will it require someone with a PhD in electrical engineering working in a clean room? What are the costs of disposal of energy packs. What are the true environmental costs. What is the range when travelling at -5 Celsius and what is the range travelling at +40 Celsius. What is the recharge time, what type of recharge system is needed, will our grid be able to support?

The Rivian website lacks any useful information.

I forgot that all the brands that represent the status quo, have such detailed information that you are talking about, like the range on a tank of fuel at -5. I’m glad that anyone with a a basic education can rebuild a modern common rail diesel too. There’s a tiny bit of sarcasm in there if you couldn’t tell.

The benefits of a electrical Ute is actually huge.

- Big Fuel savings $$$
- Much more powerful torque and towing ability
- Able to charge and connect power tools directly from the vehicle
