R plate could make things worse for returning or nervous drivers – experts

A controversial suggestion for nervous drivers to display a blue R plate on their car – similar to L and P plates for learner and provisional licence holders – could have the opposite effect, road safety experts have warned.

Nervous drivers could be adding to their woes by displaying a blue R plate – for Returning – on the back of their car, according to road safety experts.

Contrary to some media reports, the controversial idea for an R plate – similar to government-sanctioned L and P plates for learners and provisional drivers – is not an official proposal by any transport authority in Australia.

Instead, it is an idea conjured up by a public relations firm trying to generate publicity for one of its clients, a popular chain of independent tyre and mechanical workshops.

According to the PR blurb, the company claims an R plate could add confidence for elderly drivers or anyone who has suffered road trauma and is returning to driving after a long break from behind the wheel.

I reckon should be mandatory, like L and P plates, that way you know the ****ers with those R plates are going to be driving 30 under the limit in the right lane so you can chop them at the soonest opportunity that presents itself.

We all know that the sign with the number with the red circle is the minimum speed you should be going

Don't forget the 'I' plates for idiots who don't know how to use their indicators, and 'S' plates for snowflakes who speed up when an overtaking lane approaches.

very true.

However, if one is nervous, they should stay off the road.

I personally think people who have lost confidence or are nervous should get professional help rather than be thrown in the deep end only to potentially cop abuse from disgruntled drivers.

Yes we should show more compassion to these ones, but it goes both ways.

The original intent of "Baby on Board" signs, was to alert emergency services and others that if the vehicle was in an accident, fire or rollover there may be a not easily seen baby in the vehicle that needs to be rescued. Emergency services and others originally promoted the use these signs. Unfortunately and sadly, too many people now think it means "drive carefully near me as I have a baby in my car".

Given the lack of respect P platers often seem to get from many other drivers I have some significant doubts about how the "R : plate will work. I suspect some of the road bullies will take it as a signal to give them a hard time.

As I've aged I've realised that the roads are for everyone. Getting held up by a slower car doesn't really impact your life very much. So you lose 10seconds. Big deal.

I don't think we need more signs displayed in windows.

Let me put my two cents worth on this subject.
I've been driving a long time to know that some driver's on this earth
are not meant to drive.
One of those driver's is my Ex-wife i made sure when she was out in her car I wasn't because she was a very nervous driver.

I think if your a nervous driver or a driver lacking confidence for your saftey and every body else who uses the road maybe its best Not To Drive.

How about Q plates? But I guess they're not really needed, you can see the number plates have letters & numbers reversed already... But I lived there on and off for 15 years and had so much trouble with them and roundabouts... Same here, when I see them driving around in Canberra. Keeps in the right lane, going left, straight or right.

I reckon their biggest crime is indicating left when going straight through roundabouts, makes no sense to this Mexican.

Especially when its the standard 4 entry/exit job.
