Default Airbox Mod

i am about to install a ss induction kit to my AU2 XR8 and have come across the airbox mod that people do to AU XR's to get cold air from behind the headlight. After doing some research i am still unsure how to do this mod properly. I have a few questions that i hope you can answer:
-How big should the hole be in the airbox?
-What pipe should i use?
-What glue should i use to stick the pipe into the airbox?
-What area behind the lights would i get best cold air from?
-Does the mouth of the pipe need to be held somewhere for support so it doesnt move around?
-Does the typhoon cold air intake fit AU XR's?
-How long should the pipe be?
Any help will be appreciated.
cheers
chris

Pipe really doesn't make a difference, all you need to do is cut the lower section out. To do this you;
Remove entire airbox
Cut out front of lower from just below the upper lip to 1cm from the bottom and 2cm from snorkel entry
Put back in car.

Being an XR you get a lot of cold air entry through the headlight.

would that defeat the purpose of having a ss induction kit as most of the cold air coming from snorkel will be lost. also, at idle will my engine suffer from excessive heat as the airbox wont be fully disclosed and open to the heat in the engine.

Use the front bit that you cut out to block the side of the box so not as much heat can get in. I'm not a fan of the SS unit personally, I use the G&D airbox, and I've never actually seen one but a snorkel is still a good idea to have as it won't do any harm.

You might get some ideas from this post too, as performed on a Territory Turbo Ghia

Gday Chris,

Ive actually got the SS kit on my car (AU3 XR8). It was installed by Rob Herrod before i bought it, but Ive had it out a few times, Ive also done the Typhoon lower intake mod too.

First up you will need to make the hole in the airbox for the snorkel a fair bit bigger, Id suggest leaving the airbox in the car, pull the old snorkel off and put the SS one in place just so you can mark out how much you have to cut. Once youve got that done, pull the airbox out, cut out the hole for your snorkel, and cut the duct into the front of the airbox as well to fit your Typhoon intake. Its a very tight fit but it can be done.

If you use the OEM typhoon intake, it will sit in the box on its own provided it's not too loose in the hole you cut. You will need to trim back the lower intake snorkel to make it fit behind the headlights, but basically line it up to be right behind the headlights as this is where the air comes through.

The benefits from doing this is a bit better fuel econ and one hell of an improvement in sound - your car will sound a LOT better with this done.

i would like to run a pipe on mine from the front of the box to the headlight area..
but sadly i have a fairlane..
it has no "air flow" behind the light

it has a 1/2" gap below the headlight .. that is all

i have cut a gaping hole in the front of the box
and also run the tickford snorkel
and now a 3" mild steel mandrel pipe from the box to the T/B

yeah i got the snorkel as part of the ss kit. it should make a good difference with the extra flow of the big mouth ss cai and the lower typhoon intake. on ebay the typhoon intake is selling for 35bucks + 10 bucks postage. is this the best place to buy it or are there other places where i can get it from.
