Default Candidate for the Darwin award...

Electric shock for alleged copper thief

Posted 7 hours 10 minutes ago
Map: SA

A man allegedly trying to steal copper cabling has received a severe electrical shock.

Adelaide police said they, and emergency crews, went to a factory in Pinda Street at suburban Kilkenny on Tuesday night to investigate reports of a man with burns.

Police said they found the Wingfield man, 32, inside the factory with burns to his left hand, head and thighs.

They allege he entered a fenced-off electrical substation and grabbed onto a bar containing 6,350 volts.

A teenager from Glandore, who also was at the premises, called emergency services.

He allegedly told officers the pair entered the premises to steal copper cabling and ignored substation warning signs.

He is now facing trespass charges and has been given bail.

The man with burns is also expected to face charges.
As a sidenote the theft of copper wire has become a major issue all over the country.

In Brisbane a few weeks ago i recall that 3 or 4 train stations were closed due to theft of cables...

In Townsville a few months ago several large cable reels were stolen from NORQEBs yard.

Been reading articles nearly every few weeks of people who are risking electrocution by cutting LIVE wires and stealing cables... stupidy knows no bounds!

That's a very shocking story. You would have to be a bright spark to ignore the signs

This is a rather serious set of circumstances. Sad part about it is that they may very well be endangering lives OTHER than their own.

All for the sake of a few bucks at the scrap metal yard. :(

i have seen pictures of a guy after he had tried to steal live high voltage cable - didn't end well for him.

as for entering a live electrical substation - for untrained people i would think the humming/buzzing of the transformers would be enough to put them off.

i would think that the money to be made wouldn't outweigh the risks involved, much easier to get a job. and you also need a dodgy person at a scrap metal place to sell to, as far as i know anything over $100 needs an ABN and probably a good reason as to how you have acquired the copper.

we did a job recently that involved fairly heavy/thick copper cable, while the cable was layed out on the ground waiting to get run up a pole there was security on site 24/7. would have been cold and lonely sitting on the side of a highway in the dark in the middle of winter just looking at a cable.

I bet the reporter deliberately worded it that way.

copper cable is worth a fortune, 2 mates "stumbled across" a spool of 30mm HV cable and took it to simsmetal, the bloke said if he dobbed them in theyd be in jail and be banned from every minesite in australia, it was valued at 12K but was happy to offer them 8 so between the 3 of them they got 4 grand each and they could bring copper in at any time, shifty old bastard he was
