A court has deemed the Ferrari 250 GTO a work of art therefore preventing companies from building replicas of it.
https://www.automobilemag.com/news/t...a-work-of-art/ Lets hope it doesn't set a precedent for the GT40's and Cobras although I seriously doubt it.

I remember reading/seeing picture of a Lamborghini Miura, back about 1970, had been lifted by helicopter and placed in a rooftop penthouse garden on a New York (I think) skyscraper. The owner said it was too beautiful to drive, he just wanted to look at it. Some cars are works of art. And I agree on the GT40.

Damn and I was so close to finishing a copy in the driveway. Oh well at least I can recycle the paper clips, cardboard, rivets and cola cans I used.

Laughing my xss off - “a work of art” does that include the tyres and Weber’s? Looks like stupidly still rocks in Italy. The Chinese had better watch out too.
As far as I know and have read each of the 36 GTO’s has subtle differences since they were hand made, surely you can’t have 36 different pieces representing the same art? Meanwhile lookup Pur Sang they make amongst the best Bugatti replicas, they should make replica GTO’s just because. Finally those 250 GT SWB owners I feel your pain and would happily take your non-art off your hands. Last edited by cheap; 06-07-2019 at 06:17 PM. |

As for the GT40s and Cobras, I am thinking the horses are already out of the gate, HOWEVER, there are licensed continuation models in production as we type. If I can ever make that a priority, works for me. |

What will happen to those who built or own a 250 replica from a Datsun 240z? Are they to be scraped now?

This only proves that the Italian court can be bought or bribed to get the outcome you want.

It doesn't really need to be a work of art. Copyright and intellectual property apply to more than just art.
Not reproduceable, like the Mona Lisa? I dunno. I can buy a Mona Lisa poster online for $30. |

More to the point, all 36 originals are kept under constant watch by potential buyers and each of these originals have documented history. It would be impossible to create a replica and sell it as an original GTO. The pity is that as these cars become ultra-expensive numerous GTO’s get put into private collections and never get seen or heard from again.

Never did understand the buying of cars to be stored away and never driven. If I ever get a ferrari, that thing is gonna get some miles put on it. And yeah, I know, blah blah investment, and if someone gets joy out of it just by looking at it sitting on stands in their garage, well fair enough. To me personally, it's like being down the coast and seeing the same boats sitting in their dock, gathering barnacles and never ever leaving the marina. But then I am not a collector of things (despite some slight hoarding tendencies), and if I am going to have something, and spend money on something, I damn sure want to use it as intended. Or in variations thereof. |

I know a guy that has genuine GT350 shelby plus a few first gen big block camaro's, most only see the light of day when local muscle car club has annual show. He is too paranoid of putting miles on or damaging them so spends all his time in a suzuki swift. If these people want a investment buy a oil painting or like, let these cars back on the market so they can be driven as intended, plus having a few more around the prices may drop.

Its meant to be enjoyed from afar, its a visceral thing , very subjective and different people enjoy it for different reasons. Many people collect cars like art work - never touch or drive em. Me personally , Id be doing shed skids in it and state "only driven on every 5th weekend".....

They are a work of art, whoever affords them can do what they wish imo, these types of owners can afford the a motza car collection and do what they wish.
Here's another good Ferrari collector https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/golf/...ris-not-drive/

There was a time where Made in Italy meant something and they've been brutalised in the past couple of decades by cheaper manufacturing and globalisation so fair play to them.
I'm sure we'd all be up in arms if there were XY GT replicas being made from cheap Datsuns getting around car shows |
