Default ANZAC Day

"Time dims the memory of ordinary events, but not great events. In a nation's history, great events - whether in peace or war - live in our memories regardless of time. They are deemed great not necessarily for what they achieve, nor for whether they are reckoned to be victories or successes.

Rather, the great events are distinguished by the quality of the human endeavour they call upon, by the examples they create for ordinary men and women, and by the legends they inspire.

So it is with ANZAC day."

They shall not grow old,
As we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest we Forget

"Australia today is still a young country, but much has changed from that land which the original ANZACs sailed. It, however, remains a country in which we are free to choose our future and establish our place in the world.

ANZAC day reminds us that wars are to be avoided, but when necessary we must stand up for our values.

It requires us to reflect on the past with pride, but also to look ahead and build on the achievements of our predecessors. By displaying the characteristics of the ANZAC spirit, comradeship, unselfishness, courage, tenacity of spirit, we can enrich the Australian tradition.

The ANZAC spirit exists in each one of us, so therefore, let us be guided by the ANZAC spirit in facing the national and personal challenges ahead, and let us strive to be worthy of the memory of those we honour on ANZAC day."

Take a minute to think, thank and remember what being an Aussie is about.

About the only day in the year I have the motivation to get up before the sun.

Our deepest thankyou to all the people who put their lives on the line to protect what we enjoy today in Australia.

Lest we forget.

I cannot imagine, nor do I want to imagine what it was like for these men that fought and died.

We will not forget them.

There is no greater cost paid by the men who fought on our nations behalf on those shores, an even greater price for those who made it home.

I and my children in the future will be forever in debt for the legacy you left behind.... Lest we forget

ANZAC day trivia

ANZAC is the acronym for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, the formation created in December 1914 by grouping the Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Expeditionary Force stationed in
Egypt.
ANZAC day derives from operational debut at Gallipoli on
25 April 1915.
making this year the 90th Anniversary of that day in history.

All of the original ANZAC troops were volenteers. And gave themselves to the conflict out of duty to themselves, family and friends.

A new Anzac Corps was briefly formed during the campaign in
Greece in 1941, while New Zealand and Australian infantry companies combined to form an Anzac battalion during the Vietnam War.

WW1:-
Australia: 53,560 KIA + 6,300 other deaths = 59,860 with 6500 coming in the first week
New Zealand: 16,000

WW2:-
Australia 29,000 of which 23000 where confirmed as military persons

The ANZAC biscuit. The trusty ANZAC bikky was first made in WW1 when the supply of rations to the troops became low. (If you have youngsters about make a batch and tell them where the recipe comes from)
1 cup rolled oats

1 cup plain flour
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup desiccated coconut
1 tablespoon of golden syrup
1/2 cup butter/margarine
1 1/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
2 tablespoons of boiling water

hmm i feel like a cookie now...

Lest We Forget

My kids are lucky enough to have met my Grandfather who was a WW2 veteran and also my Step Grandfather who is still with us, whom is also a WW2 veteran. My Uncle is a Vietman veteran as well. So there is a fair history within our family of these increadable men who have served their country to keep it as we now know it.

They have the understanding of why we celebrate these great men & have always been encouraged to do so.

They also adore Anzac cookies ;)

Some people see ANZAC day as a public holiday, and others see it as a day where AUSTRALIANS from all around the world stop to remember those who fought for us.
When life seems all to hard, remember we have it easy.

First time I had attended an ANZAC day march, it was a moving experience.

Not sure but i dont think so. I have a few thoughts on this but as i dont want to detract from the thread or start an argument over it i'll keep them to myself.

The least we can give all those who made the sacrifice is a day for them. Lest we forget.

both my gran dads were in ww2 and my old man was in veitnam war,

my old man spent this ANZAC day in Long Tan, which is a pretty significant place for aussie diggers from the veitnam war, so id like to say thanks to my family and everyone, both those who made it back home, and those who didnt, also to all those at war today....thankyou
