Default Baited

This morning at 0430 on the Roe Freeway on my to the airport in the F6 ute I was baited by a Commodore. I was at about a dollar 20 and he pulled alongside, pulled back, etc. etc. Normally I would have had a go but the fact that it was a poxy Commonwhore thus no match for the FPV and not worth the waste in petrol and the fact that something didn't seem quite right stopped me... The baiting continued for quite a few kilometres.... He then pulled alongside just before he took and off ramp and wagged his finger at me enough for me to see his badge...

So there you go peeps, even at 0430 in the morning you can't let your guard down... Consider what I got up to as a kid in cars it is a wonder any of the kids these days keep their licence for more than a couple of months at a time. No wonder my nephew has lost his three times already even though he is only now turning 19...

I am surprised he did not pull you over for the 20 cents extra, but your right they will try and entice you.

About 2 years ago in the CBD I had two motor cycle cops pull up on my left hand side at a set of lights. I had my 13 yr old sun as a passenger, it was summer so windows wound down enjoying the freah air.

As they pulled up one of them looked in and saw the radar detector. Well this caused the two of them to start chatting and the closest one then lent down and spoke through the passenger window saying "my partner reckons you dont need a detector for a Ford". They then had a laugh and started to rev their bikes.

This was like a red rag to my son who was urging me to floor it and sure enough they took off like scalded cats on the green. Fortunately I am an old fart and realised that they were just baiting.

Still it seems kind of wrong in my humble opinion for a law officer to try and tempt you into breaking the law he/she is supposed to be enforcing.

cheers

Peter

well in a society that's all about raising revenue, it doesn't really surprise me that they do these kinds of things to make people break the law, some people just don't have the common sense not to go racing anyone they see

In my younger days we used to have a race to our nearest town against our local copper, well could have called it an escort to the basketball game. He was our coach and captain. Jeez we were silly back then
but when he was on duty look out

it's wrong how they entice you to break the law. Really aggrivates me.

Little story of baiting (in perth) for me less than a year ago...

I was baited one morning on my way home from a mates place, we rocked up late one night to his place and a few of us started watching the tokyo drift F&F movie...half way through at around 3am the movie was ****ing me off that much i decided to go home and catch up on some sleep and when i pulled on to dianella drive (for you southies, its a nice long straight) a black vy ss ute pulled along side me with it's spotties on (isn't that illegal on a clear summers night/morning!!!?) and he started wanting to drag. For the first couple hundred meters i ignored him (being in a little escort is no match for an ls1 derrrrrrr) but after a while we both just crept our speeds up to roughly 140clicks (70 zone) and then they start driving erraticly around my car (tailgating pulling along side etc) so i was thinking "i'm going to get away from these f_ucker$. If i drove slow they drove slow, if i went faster to lose them no help. The only way to lose them was in some twisties but then that could be 'dangerous driving charge' so just incase i wasn't going to take that risk.

After 5minutes of this crap they pulled me over. Ignored everything they said to me and they let me go (after doing 140 in a 70 aswell). Goes to show how wrong they were in doing all that crap that they let me go. I probably should have reported them at the end of the day but cbf and i was speeding (after they kept nagging me though) which would be their defence. But what really gets me is what was the point of all of this? A. it taught me nothing B. It made me even more ****ed off C. These 40-50yo officers were less mature on the street than a 21yo in a much more powerful car too. Go figure.

Just another case as to why this 21yo has NO respect for cops on the road. They can go to hell.

Isn't baiting the same as entrapment which is illegal? Or is that legal here.

Umm, the simple fact that one would proceed to race and then be caught, in my opinion, would be the drivers fault, baited or not, its still a decisison you made.

Sucks to be you i say if you got caught

when they first got the SV6`s i was pulling out of Hillarys for all you perth boys in the VC and the VC for what she is doesnt do to bad she cracks 0-100 in 10 seconds. There was a black sv6 next to me and i thought ah why not ill just toy around anyway i took off and they pulled up next to me looked at me and it was a damn cop. Luckily he had something to do put his lights and sirens on and took off into the distance. Now im very warey of 'playing around'

not really. entrapment is where they dont give you a choice but to break the law.

if they encourage you to do it by revving their cars and you take it, not entrapment. However if they were to give you no option but to break the law then that is entrapment. eg, (stupid example) they pull you over for speeding, and said something like we will give ya a warning if you smoke em up. thats entrapment because you are given no option.

Yeah but they are making you do something you would not have normally done if it wasn't for their interaction. If it was something more serious (drugs e.t.c) where the case would be tried in a court it would be very hard to convict.

Disclaimer: This is just my opinion. I am not familiar with the law whatsoever, I haven't needed to be (yet). All my legal experience comes from watching Law And Order and similar shows so I may very well be wrong.

Highway Patrol cops love cars and love driving fast. That's why they join.

not in WA apparently...

that baiting is rediculous....I guess they are within their rights to do it, but they shouldn't be doing it...

I have had a similar experence with a cop that baited me by driving all around me for a while so I floored it only to race within reason for a while and at the 3rd set of lights showed me his badge and then drove off in a slow fashion and so did I .

I have had cars do the baiting thing while in my coupe and I just ignore it but a few times I have had to pull off down another street to get away from it as it becomes uncomfable with their driving .

I would be very unimpressed if a cop baited me in this fashion .The only reason for me flooring it while in my coupe would be to get away from endangoring my car and if it turned out to be cops I know I would be ****ed about that and would concider not stopping (but I more than likley would) Its not like they have much of a chance

Given that the law is black and white, and interpreting it makes it grey, it wouldn't take much for a half intelligent lawyer to argue you out of this one. However, is the money and aggrevation worth it????

Baited or not the intent is to catch you doing the wrong thing. If you are willing to race than that is all they need.

No use arguing that you wouldn't have done it if you had of known because no one would be stupid to race if they knew it was a cop driving the other car. That is the whole point :
