Default western ring road cameras on in 2 weeks

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...3-2862,00.html

THE speed enforcement net will tighten on lead-foot drivers when a battery of a new type of cameras is switched on along the Hume Freeway this month.

Government coffers will soar by $100 million with the return of cameras along the Western Ring Rd after a three-year absence

would still be nice to introduce 10kmph tolerance.......

Great... I travel on the ring road, and the hume everyday...

If only people were actually able to maintain a steady speed, my cruise control may actually be able to be used effectivly!

I'll just have to extra vigilent and check my speedo more than the road...:P

Good god, can you just imagine it, especially on the Hume............

- a conga line of cars sitting 3 inches away from the bumper of the one in front, too scared to drift more than 1kph over the limit;

- eyes of drivers fixed on speedos instead of the road;

- people riding the brakes down hills;

- somebody deciding to brake suddenly when they see a camera, despite the fact there's a B-double on their tailgate, only because the "think" they may have drifted over the limit in the last 2kms, so they slow down before going through the next camera checkpoint.

Yep, that's the sort of driving practices we really want. This friggin state government is in absolute wedlock to speed camera revenue. Its a disgrace.

my old car had no cruise .. and when the cameras were up i was always looking at the speedo and stayed on 95kmh(an after a few km will cruise to 100kmph) cause these cameras are probably as dodgy as the last.

When ever I travel in Victoria it seems like a far more dangerous place than any other state. Drivers are not concentrating on their surrounding. They are locked onto their speedo. Perhaps it is a bad habit of mine , but I always just drive at a safe speed. Checking my speedo is a secondary consideration. It is much safer to have a good situational awareness than to dogedly gaze at the speedo. I will be in MLB in May, but I have taken insurance, I will not be contributing the her' Brack's revenue coffers. And besides didn't you Victorians just re-elect the hair piece? He must be doing a great job (sarcasm)

And this is saving lives how exactly?? What BS will they use to convince us all that the point-to-point camera system is being introduced to cut the road toll and not revenue raising, I wonder _

You must either be 15 or from out of state. Lets see who winges when they are done 3km over at 4am. You cant give full concentration to the road when you have to be pedantic with your speedo...

I hear a lot of victorians say this. But pardon me, is it not the people of victoria keep re-electing him.

Seriously, I do not think a change of government would relax on the camera issue, especially if as much revenue as stated is being raised.

I was absent from Victoria for 3 years ('98 to '01) and when I returned, I couldn't believe the state of paranoia Vic drivers were in. In the Governments quest for cash (and so called road safety) they have created a multitude of accidents waiting for a time slot. Good call pencil necks. This strategy can only produce money and carnage, because it sure as hell aint doing much else. When finances are right, I'll be returning north.

I guess I shouldn't be too worried... The main times I travel on these particular roads is around 8am, and 5pm... so there is very little chance of me exceeding 40km/h let alone the speed limit :P

These were turned off 3 years ago for not working properly. Whats to say they wont again, or even admit to it once 1 mistake has been realised? Some of these cameras are time over distance, which I would say are at greater risk to error

Should be less risk as they would be linked to a central computer.

So what you do is, drive at 150 past the camera, pull over before the next camera and have a cup of coffee, have a little nap, then go past the next camera at 190. Brilliant. See Steve Tax revenue raise now.

actually IIRC it gets you for speeding PAST the camera + it gets you if you get to the next point before a certain time.

so you get dicked twice

Solution: "pull over into service lane" where the cameras overhead can't get you... pretend your car stalled or something... than pull back on the road...

or.. if you want to make it obvious.. just drive past cameras in service lane... that'll trick 'em!!

I'm still furious.

Other motor organisations need to grow some balls and stand up to the government. The only statistics the show 'speed kill' is the ones governments provide. I know from experiance that speed is only a minor contributor to road death and moto accidents.
I also know that speed cameras generate alot of money for the government.

All I can say is the government considers money is more important then life.
