Default MC Mondeo TDCi stalling/starving for fuel

Hi all,

Had an issue xmas eve with my Mondeo stalling shortly after starting, then winding over for 30 seconds or so before starting, then stalling again.

Didn't have time to muck with it, so took the wife's car instead. Finally got a chance to look this afternoon, and it started after 30 seconds of winding, then missed a little then cleared. Before i started it there appeared to be air in the fuel line after the filter, and obvious bubbles of air when it was missing.

Bubbles cleared out and it seems to be running fine now (haven't driven it though)

Any thoughts. Fuel filter has done around 22K km, i usually change it at 30K. Tank is over 1/4 full so i don't think it's that. Planning on replacing the filter tomorrow, then taking it for a run.

Bad fuel maybe? Did this happen not long after fueling up?

No, about 800km after refilling.

My wife was the last to drive it, and she has a tendency to drive too fast up our rough gravel driveway. I thought maybe she shook some air bubbles into the system but it had sat overnight before trying to start the first time.

Shaking as such would not do it, but if your on a 1/4 tank and the driveway is steep, the fuel can move away from the pick up and then it might suck up some air?

Fingers crossed this is the cause. Driveway is quite steep, and very rough at the moment. I'll change the filter today and see if that helps. I do around 1500km a week in this car so reliability is a must.

Same issue today. Very low fuel level, and steep rough driveway. Misfired a few times on the way to town this morning, and threw an Engine Malfunction warning.

Put 69.9L in it and CEL cleared upon restart. Must not try to drive home and back with the fuel light on (45km round trip)

A similar thing happened in my 2011 MC Mondeo. Engine would stall while driving and it progressively got worse until eventually I couldn’t start the car. Check with scanner showed a few messages including both low and high fuel pressure messages.
Turns out it was the high pressure fuel sensor in the fuel rail. Could be a different issue but worth ruling out. Got a second hand sensor one from the wreckers for $100 and it fixed the issue for me.
