I have two blue 12" Neons under my dash lighting up the footwells. These replace the footwell lights. I also have a 20" Crystal Blue Neon on the back of the seat just above the amps to light up the boot to the bass (as people saw at the geelong meet yonks ago) Yes I know Im a ricer and I love it :

I did this as its illegal to have neons turned on while in driving the vehicle in the state of victora. The cops will hassle you for this. Im not sure about WA thou. if you wanted to wire them up to a switch its quite simple. Depends on what kinda switch and where abouts

Yep, although if you also use your cigarette lighter for more power intensive uses, ie portable fridge, Id run the neons on a seperate power supply. |

I recommend you go for cold cathode over neons. Cold cathodes are much more vivid (I've tried both) and I think they also use less current. But they do cost more to buy.
You can get 100mm and 300mm cold cathodes in all the colours from Jaycar. I'm fairly sure they sell double inverters too, so you can run two cold cathodes from the same inverter. Also, neons and cold cathods draw fairly low current in general so it's safe to run off the cigarette lighter circuit.

Neons: 12": $19.95 CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluro) 100mm: $27.95 300mm: $39.95 Basically, the CCFL are twice the price of Neons, but still remain my preference. All prices include the inverters, so all you need is the 12V supply ;)

Coming from an ex neon user :P (when I had the XE)
I wired mine up to the headlights. So when the headlights were on, the neons were on. Technically they weren't neons, as I bought some 12V fluros (suited for looking under the bonnet at night when something's wrong, powered from the battery), and covered them in layers of blue and purple tinted contact until the "UV colour" looked good. This was back in the late 90s though. Anyhoo, the trick is to make sure the light source can't be seen. I fitted mine under the front seats and it "washed" the floor with light. Everyone thought they came from under the dash or the back seats. Lights can't be seen = floating on a cloud Visible lights = strip bar/pizza joint on wheels I ran the wires under the plastic door runners or whatever they're called, then under the centre console to power the passenger seat neon. I probably should've used a fuse, but it was an XE lol (no great loss!) No pix unfortunately (or fortunately? Remember, UV neons and tan XE = bad colour combo! I also had a CD player back then and 12" subs hehe... awaiting palpitations from Mick) -Dave- |

ive got two 12" greenies in the foot spaces under the dash, took me bout 30 mins to install both, ran the wires straight to the cigarette lighter, they r on all the time, and i havnt been picked up on it by the cops (even when they went over the whole car for the roadwrothy and when they gave me the canary). I picked them both up for $14 a piece at JB HI-FI.

Have you thought of those LED rings you can get from jaycar? Gives off a neon like light, but well, not a neon. Not sure on legality though. Anyone?
