the administration won't be too worried about the bloke in the front or the damage to the car, but boy will they be spitting chips over the lost revenue!

Camera vans do stop accidents with the general public. The camera vans take the business end of a crash instead.
The risks that go with the 'job' I guess. If you can call that a job.

Most of these camera operators really should be employing road traffic control if they are working within 3 metres of a roadway, including cones, flashing amber lights and message boards - otherwise they are breaching OHS laws.

The driver lost control and ran into it.... a bright colour would make no difference.

There is no one outside the van working.... therefor its a parked vehicle.
You dont need cones when you pull over to talk on your phone....

Come on guys some of the replys are getting a bit um... stoopid

your not allowed to pull over and make a phone call, your still classified as in control of a motor vehicle whilst the keys are in the car whether its off or on, youd have to get out of the car

i see the speed camera operators setting up in bulla almost every week and they spend a good minute or 2 walking around the car and getting stuff out of the boot every time

That van is green buddy. The colour would've made no difference anyway, the wet road surface was probably a contributing factor as a TV news report claimed the Hyundai driver hit the brakes and couldn't stop in time.

In road construction, If you are working within 3 metres, it doesn't matter if you are in the car or not.

A speed camera would have prevented this.

Oops.

When the speed vans set up in the ACT they have more flashing orange lights than a road work party!

The van was stationary... parked on the side of the road.

IIRC it was 4am or thereabouts, isn't that a bit early? I've never seen a speed van out that early.

I seen this on the news.....the one thing that stood out to me was the vehicle that crashed into the parked van had most of the damage on the drivers side which meant it almost passed to the left of the van

thats a long way off course

dont understand that one.......I just hope all are well!

Black car at night is very hard to see.

If the purpose of the van is to slow people down it will not do that if it cannot be seen.

If the purpose of the van is to raise revinue by giving out tickets then black is the perfect color.

And regardless of anyones personal politics in this case the speed camera DID NOT make the road safer and prevent an accident.

In saying all this I am sure there will be more to the story.
What were the weather conditions?
Was the van set up correctly complying with regulations?
What were all of the contributions to the collision?

This may end up being quite interesting.......

So you dont normally see them when your out doing hot laps at 4am? Neither do I might have to re-schedule to 3am soon just to be safe.......

Is this correct?? Does that differ from state to state?
I've been pulling over to the side of the road to use my phone or check a map or something. Most of the time the car is still running but sitting in park.
Are you saying that's illegal too? Holy cow. I thought I was doing the right thing....

The story I heard on the news that morning was the driver of the car came over the hill and braked suddenly when he spotted the (safety camera van) and lost control. The road where this occurred is not the best and fairly narrow with dirt verge.Mt Cotton road Just past Woodlands drive I believe at Sheldon.

So the driver lost control and runs into a stationary object.... yes clearly its the fault of the Police camera van....

Im sure i can use this in court... im sorry your honour i saw a tree on the side of the road and it was kinda close to the gutter, so i jammed on the brakes and slid right into it.

Probably speeding that's why they stood on the brakes is my guess.I think it is 80 k zone out there.

Were you there?

If not then rather than just assume how about waiting until the investigation has been completed.
