So I have a Holden Astra VXR which is still under warranty but the clear coat has just started to lift on the bonnet. Is this sort of thing covered under warranty normally? I note that overseas there has been issues with this particular colour in the Astras.
You can see the cracks appearing in the clear coat. That line in the middle of the patch that is lifting lines up with the cracking. There doesn't appear to be a stone chip there. This picture has me wondering if the bonnet had been repaired predelivery. See the few pits in the paint I have circled. Other than that there is no obvious signs of a respray. There is no overspray anywhere and when you pop the bonnet you can see the underside of the outer skin. There is no damage to be seen under there. The only problem is I bought the car secondhand with only around 10000km on the clock. At the time the seller assured me that the vehicle had never had an accident and as I said there is no evidence to show that it has but who knows. There is another spot where the clear coat is lifting as well but no pics of that. The car is under 5 years old, still covered by warranty and has around 35000km on the clock. From my view, a cars paint should be expected to last more than 5 years before that type of damage occurs.
I would most definitely pursue it.

99% chance this is the response you'll get. Oh on a semi related note, I knew a Toyota dealer that was fixing damaged pre delivered cars with aftermarket parts. Wonder how that would go down for warranty repairs!

I'd be taking it to a good panel shop (or two) and asking if they can see signs of repair.
At least if they say it's original you'll have some ammo for a warranty claim.

Mmmm, those pits seem like a poor repair job. Not necessarily from an accident. Maybe stone chips or hail damage (especially that great grey spot with a grove in it)???? Putty?

Yeah, there's paint over pits and chips. I don't think that's factory paint.
I feel fo you OP because ford shockwave is a similar colour and fault - peeling off - but it happens all over the car, on every panel. By looking at yours it's not a warranty issue because only on one panel and its painted over pits, gouges and chips. No way it would have left the factory like that. Looks like a faulty repair job done outside of the original factory paint |

Pretty easy to work out if its been repaired or not, paint depth gauge tells all

Ha Ha, what? I've done something to you when? Telling you your pipe needed soldering? Not liking black cars or new 300k cars?
The warranty for that non factory job would be with the dealer or repairer who painted it, and you'll have to find them and get them to admit fault. By all means go complain to holden, they're free to do that. More likely a dealer touchup like you suspect . Go see holden or email your photos to holden and see what they say.
