QLD Police cars arent fitted with computers yet (though a few highway patrol cars have been).... so without a sticker they have to ask over the radio for rego details. Unless of course they plan on rolling out more rego recognition cameras and have them fitted to every street corner.

WA has been without stickers for the past year.
It's good not having an ugly sticker on the windscreen, but a pain trying to remember when the rego is due.

How is it a good idea?
As i said before, Police in this state do not have computers in their cars yet, only a few highway patrol cars have recently had them fitted. I cant see why everyone thinks its a "great" thing? If i have an accident with someone how do i know the car isnt registered? For all i know is he has false plates on the car. As an example, my neighbour continually drives around in unregistered cars and swaps number plates between vehicles, in the future i wont be able to report him as I wont have a clue if what he is doing it legit or not. Hardly a smart thing...

NSW will be without them soon, the ARS has been fitted to a few highway cars and will be in all cars as funding allows...

I wonder how much increased income there is going to be from people who for whatever reason unintentionally let their rego lapse.
It would be useful to have an ability for rego to paid monthly by direct transfer somewhat similar to GoVia so once your car is registered you no longer have to worry about it. As far as checking unregistered cars, all Police vehicles have a radio and whomever is in the chair has a computer that is online to all states for QV, SPER and all the other warrant and history checks. |

I say give it a go QLD - jeezus we spent $450 million on the new licensing system and it is a complete failure too.
Another dodgy vote grabber by a Govt on the ropes.

I've always been puzzled with the problem people have with them...
With a glance, you can see that the car is registered, that those number plates belong on that car, and that the car the sticker is on is in fact the car it is for. I remember answering a few awkward questions on the roadside with an old Z1000J motorbike I used to own when I repainted it bright green but the rego sticker still said "black" and a cop noticed it. It was easy with a bike to point to the engine number and show him it was the bike the plate was for. As said, all cop cars don't have computers, and isn't it easy just to have one small sticker with the cars info on it? |

So it appears that the days of the old rego sticker are coming to an end.
Here's a look back at the evolution of Queensland registration sticks |

i recently went over the pits in ACT with out a rego sticker and they didnt even mention it, think its becoming one of those things that is redundant. by the time the cop walks around and checks the sticker his partner in the car can probably tell him what you had for breakfast on the computer

SA has now embarked on a new plan to remove all home-made trailers from the roads..
Even if you are 1 day late on paying your trailer rego.. and your trailer falls out of rego.. you are required to obtain an engineering certificate and a VIN (to be attached to the trailer) before rego is renewed. If your trailer already has a VIN then it can be re-registered. Dont know when it started.. but we got caught out yesterday!.. Now I have a trailer not worth the engineering cost.. that we can't register.

That sucks...I've never owned a "factory built" trailer, boat or box...most people I know just keep recycling old trailers over the years, either thier own or buy an old one for a hundred bucks, building new boxes on old chassis, re-flooring them, new guards, real "grandfathers axe" things. I would suspect it's new trailer companies pushing for it under the guise of "safety" as when big car companies push for banning cars older than 5/10 years old for 'safety reasons"...not for increased sales or anything...nope, not that...
Rego stickers: good point about the guy who swaps plates...do they think that every accident and parking lot bingle requires police to turn up? If you know a guys car is registered, you have at least a little assurance he is probably covered. Now you won't have any idea and just have to take the guys word for it when he gives you your details that "everything will be OK"... Last edited by 2011G6E; 20-12-2011 at 01:19 PM. |

Yeah it can be a pain remembering when regoes are due, without a rego sticker, but a couple of things I do.
One, stick the renewal form (which every rego dept sends out) on the fridge with a magnet. 2nd. A white board, with dates when the rego is due. Being in the motor industry, I test drive cars. My employer gets the customer to sign a piece of paper, stating the owner consents to the vehicle being driven and it is registered. That way, if they are telling porkies, employees don't cop the fine. The owner does. So it's not a big deal anyways, eitherway.

it's a great thing! i get booked on my bike for failing to display the ugly thing! so one less offence plod can use to extract cash from me. as well as that publicly displaying VIN numbers is not smart, a thief uses this information when looking for a candidate for "rebirthing"

That's a cool collection of rego stickers!! I can remember the old "transfer" ones that had to be soaked in water like a decal on a model kit. I started driving in '82 and remember most of those...

If its anything like W.A. You can still get rego Stickers, just have to ask for one in person. Try buying a second hand car or bike, no sticker for quick reference on how much rego is left.

An impressive collection. Do you have a 1953 Queensland label or photograph of same? Or know of any sources?

Unusual first post.........The thread is 11 years old and the member you are addressing hasn't been online since 2014, so I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for an answer.
