I would love to have a quieter car, i.e. engine noise, exhaust noise, etc to be quiet, or almost silent. I know this goes against all those people who love their cars to be noisy and sounding like they have plenty of grunt, however Is there a way to make a car (EL GLi Falcon) quiet?

Don't start it lol. IMO, "quiter" tyres, new door seals & body deadener, or, turn up the stereo.

are you for real? ive updated from an ea, to el, there unbelievably more refined, especially noise wise. they even had thicker windows...lol
tyres, make sure your windows are up, turn the radio on, take a tissue box with you, put more mufflers in your exhaust, make sure you have bonnet heat sheild in place

replace the engine with a 4 cylinder, and put a 1 inch exhaust on it with two mufflers.

its generally more road noise or wind noise, since you've got an EL its already got thicker windows.
how ever being a GLi it would be missing some of the sound deadening. i'm not quite sure where its different though.

Hey at least your EL is quieter than an EF, you have thicker windows for more noise supression.

Pull out all interior including dash and seats.
Sound deaden all steal including inside the doors and in the boot. Replace underlay and refit carpet and interior. Quieter.

Half-arsed thought #2 from Dave:
How about more sound deadening in the wheel arches? (it may stop some sound travelling thru to the cabin, you never know) Also, keeping with GMH8TR's idea of quieter tyres, a smaller rim/larger tyre combo generally cuts noise too. LTDHO's post will probably be the best way to go about it though. |

Id say, check your rubbers, get some quality tyres on it (ie Michelin), make sure the boot is sealing probably, remove any weathershields and look at getting more sound deadner applied.
Unfortunately Falcon's arent the quietest cars.

yeah the guys have pretty much covered it...perhaps some thicker bonnet material would help too.
My el is so much quiter than my ea its unbelievable.

Do you have any sound deadening on your firewall?? This is a good place to start. You can lay bitumen material on the whole floor pan under the carpet. Also, take your door trim off and seal off all access holes in the frame work with MDF (just silicon in place so that you can rip it off weh you need to change your window regs). If you wanna go ballistic, then use a dedicated sound deadening such as stinger road kill or dynamat on the doors aswell (will make the speakers sound better aswell ;)), and the lay bitumen material on the inside of the door trims aswell. Sound deadening your wheel arches will also help, you can either get the spray on tar sound deadener and spray it on the inside of your arches, or you can lay dynomat or similar from the inside of the car onto the wheel arches underneath the carpet. Sound deadening your boot will also help. Stick bitumen material along the sides and on the floor of the boot, but if money's not an option, lay dynomat on every conceavable surface in the boot, then lay the bitumen material over the top. All of the above will ensure a VERY quiet car, i did pretty much everything i've listed, and the difference was incredible, but cost close to $1000 (most of the cost was the boot). Have fun
