G'day
Does any one know how these work? I had a manual gearbox replaced by a dodgy mechanic and since then, the reverse lights come on when the car is in neutral/no gears engaged. When it is put into reverse (or any gear), they turn off again. There are 2 double cables going into the gearbox underneath. One should be the reverse switch, what might the other be? I'm thinking they might be the wrong way around. They are not just plugs so before I cut them off and have a play with my multimeter, I'd like some more info. Any suggestions? Cheers, |

Got a workshop manual?
If you get stuck, I can see what my factory workshop manual's wiring diagram states.

No I don't have one for this car. I'll go get one or at least have a quick flick while I'm picking up some other bits I need. Thanks, that should help.

Okay - just pulled my manual out of the shed.
1st plug is the backup lamp switch. 2nd is described as a "park/neutral position switch" and this is definitely for the manual transmission (section 41 under manual transaxle removal). Wiring diagram indicates the same. Both are located next to each other.

Perfect, thanks a lot for that!
So that would suggest the backup/reverse lights are on the wrong switch! I'll swap the cables over and should all be sweet. Now I wonder what is hooked up the the actual backup/reverse light switch currently!! |

have a look and unplug, clean and refit the plugs. see if that resolves it.
If you want further info, flick me a PM and I'll see if I can dig it out for you.

The only other thing on it should be the speed sensor... but your speedo would be out. Its earthing somewhere I reckon.

Where should these plugs be located. I found 2. My multimeter suggests that one of them is definitely the reverse light switch. The other seems to be un-affected by where the gear stick is.

The other might just be an earth, did you swap them and see the outcome?

Unfortunately, they are not electrical plugs but actual sockets that go into the gearbox housing. I'm not sure if removing them will drain the gearbox. One is right near the base and the other is on top.
I think I'll have to go get a workshop manual for this one. |

Nah - I can try and scan or take a pic of the relevant pages out of the factory manual.

Ashh, are you able to take a photo? If its just the plugs, and you're not unscrewing anything, you shouldn't lose any oil at all... but not quite sure what you're describing.
