Default Au Rust Thread., Warning, Dont Look If U Cant Handle Sight Of Rust

Well inspite of seeing my mates series 1 forte, tonight, i thought i show what we found,

Well, i gave him my ts50 kit for his stock kit, so we procced to take his rear bar off, so we undo the nuts inside the boot, now the pop rivets holding his brackets on were rusted and just fell out, then he started to get worried, so we pulled his rear bar off to find this shocking images, of what was to come,

Right hand tail light

Holy crap! Does he garage his car in a salt bin or something? I'm used to seeing that sort of decay on cars from the 1970's but not something that is 10 years old!

Yeah, mines got a couple of bubbles on the ridge below the rear number plate.

Should have replaced the boot rubber sooner :(

Seriously this doesn't suprise me in the least, have seen far worse in AU's
before including the white Ghia I currently own when we 1st got it.

I also know of a local car BF2 may I add that failed a "warrent of fitness" (NZ rwc every 6 months)
due to excessive rust.

i saw a white forte the other day it had rust perforation right around the boot lid number plate area, basiccly it looked like a big 2 foot by 1 foot rust mouth, the thught that went through my mind was has he back a boat into the salt water too far, who knows, or perhaps some of these cars have had a hit up the backside?

I think that's a result of a leaking boot rubber. Mine leaked for ages (I'd get drowned whenever I lifted the boot) and that's likely where the water pools.

That is not quite what I expected. Did your mate pull the car out of a river or something. The only rust i've found on my au is on the boot shocks ( or whatever you call them ).

Bloody pitiful for a 10 year old car isnt it... My old EA is what, 19 years old now, and its got less rust than my XR8. What the hell is ford thinking?

absolutely pathetic. There should never be rust issues on non-coastal cars. Get it right, it ain't that hard.

This history of the car is not known.

Car is 10+ years old so could be flood damaged could have lived in the beach..

I had many fords none of wich suffered rust issues.

With the history unknown, we shouldn't be bagging the AU/Ford just yet, there could be many factor's why this has developed and at such force.

lets put this into perspective guys,

yes that rust is bad on a 10 year old car.

and yes you would expect something like that from the 70's

HOWEVER,

even with all modern technology, and able to work out where water will pool and everything, no car can be tested on longevity for rust, so if a car rusts after 10 years, well, crap you know. at the time, it may have seemed like a rust proof design, but time takes its toll. not much we can do unfortunately.

im sure ford will be seeing examples of this now, and on newer cars, and will put that learning into development of newer models. but that being said, its not like they road test them for 10 years before releasing them!

Get Blackers10 to post up his passenger door where it got hit when he was T-boned. Half the window sill is gone, lol.

I'm bagging Ford because I know the exact history of my ford for the last 10 years. It has spent its whole life in the state's Capital City, and it has rust. Like most AUs, around the boot struts and underneath.

My word to you here folks:
Unless you have an extremely cared for AU, If you believe your AU doesn't have rust you're not looking hard enough.

yes but ford replaced the rusted out boot struts under the 5 year rust warranty. i would know because i had one done. consequently, the 2nd one took approx 8 years for the rust to show and rust out, but im sure if i got bothered i could attempt to try that kill rust crap, and paint it, but hey, im lazy. it happens and thats a common example.

the pictures upthe top are an extremely bad case. but rust is a fact of life. just like taxes. :togo:

My old man was (retired) into the panel beating/painting trade, and I know for sure 100% that my AU has no rust what so ever.
Even though it is extreamly well cared for, maybe your's was a Fri/Mon built car ?.

Doesn't suprise me. You only have to look at the top of the boot near the glass to see where all the water and mud and crap collects. At least in the later model cars they've made that area sealed off so water doesn't collect in there.

I doubt it, everything else about the car actually proves it to be an excellent example even through adversity

I hand picked it myself because of this, despite the rust.

Now my white AU1, it was a mon/fri car.... :

Pretty much all AUs over here have some rust in them. Mine has it bad at the ends of the crossmember under the parcel tray. I'd hate to see what it would look like under the windscreens.
I'm acutally putting two 15 speed truck gear boxes (500ish kg worth) in the boot tomorrow and driving 400km, so wouldn't be too suprised if she end up in two like the pics above.
