i use my digital handy cam, and download the footage, and just save a sound file, pretty easy, and good quality stereo

use a sound proof room with no reverb, have a Sennheiser 416 mic running through a mixing console with Digital converter in to the computer, record using Sound Forge. Use a pop-guard if you need to. Make sure you record using a high sample rate in WAV format.

Yeah, if you're recording your car, just drive it through the studio wall and hit record lol.

Cool Edit Pro can be sourced pretty easily if you're playing round with sound files. It'll handle converting to and from mp3 > wav or whatever format you're after.
