Like virtually every au irs, I found my upper strut mounts were loose so when i looked at the price of new ones at $250 each that will fail soon enough I thought I could do something better.
This mod only works if the rubber is only mildly worn (strut moves up and down but not side to side). I made a spacer out of hdpe (cutting board) about 6mm thick which pushes the aluminium bobbin down which allows the rubber "fingers" top and bottom to grab the bobbin tightly which restricts movement up and down. For further support I modified some rubber bits from clark rubber to further support the bobbin from sideways and down force. I can now jump up and down and drive the car without watching the strut move in the mount. Refer to pics. Cheers.[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]tml][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] I can supply pics of spacer and part number of rubber part from clark rubber if interested.

PS: Not as good as Sox's idea of getting rid of the original stuff altogether, but can work well if only mildy worn (only moves up and down), or you want to increase longevity of a new one.

I did it myself originally with some washers. In the end I just wanted to build a better mouse trap as I found other weaknesses inherent in the design.
