Hi All...
Am looking at getting a capri for a project for me and my two boys to build, and would like to get some info about what is needed to engineer a V8 capri in NSW. Things like, what is needed brake wise, engine and gearbox cross members, which motor, clevo or windsor and how old? Do they need a collapsible stearing column? Do they need any trans tunnel modifications for big autos? etc etc ect... I know Castlemaine Rod Shop do a conversion kit for the V8, does anyone else? Also does anyone know an engineer in the Hunter/Newcastle or Tamworth Region that would be good to talk to about this conversion. Any Info guys will be much appreciated, pics included. Hope to one day be croozin with you all in a hot street capri... Cheers |

Welcome to the forums ESPcracker.
As a first step, have a look at the RTA website, which has guidelines on modified cars, including the capacity-to-weight restriction. I'm not in NSW so I can't remember what it is unfortunately. |

Ive swapped in a 351 Cleveland into a Capri using the Hadfield kit which provides a full chassis, all crossmembers and mounts etc mine fit well but others had to fiddle a bit. Fairly straightforward swap, except that you will need custom extractors and a small booster for the brakes to clear the Clevelands rocker covers (I used a 120Y booster and XC Master cylinder), and the firewall meeting the trabs tunnel will need to be massaged to clear the larger bellhousing on the cleveland. Go a C10 gearbox. I also used a Centura diff, which is around 1" wider than the std capri diff. Also, go for the biggest radiator you can fit, I used a 4 core Commodore radiator which was ok but airflow with the big Clevo was a problem hence it never ran as cool as I would have liked in traffic. For registration you will find upgraded brakes a must, Hadfield or Hoppers stoppers are your friends here
I think however in NSW you will have a problem registering a 351C in a Capri, so the 302W is the best bet, and quite frankly is the more practical swap if you just want a street weapon. Either way they are a hell of a lot of fun Any questions, just ask away. |
