They had 16 ships arrive since April vs 13 the last time they got big numbers. Supply has ramped for Australia. Also, June last year was when the Y was launched so only a few made it to the country in time hence the huge increase number.

They started reporting last year after multiple requests from the owners club actually.

Because of the spotty nature of supply month to month, I reckon end of year figures will be the best representation of what Australian new car consumers want.

Think the supply issues have been resolved for most manufacturers. The delays are pent up demand rather than a supply issue; fulfilling the orders from the supply issue period.

We've been waiting circa two months for old man's i30N sedan in manual, was supposed to be here last month but the car that turned up was an auto

Its all a bit of a joke at the moment trying to get your hands on new cars, shouldn't be this hard.

It'll normalise with supply not being an issue anymore. Eventually.

Bespoke models like a N might still be slow as companies look to fulfill bread and butter models first.

Two months isn't long when you consider they're made overseas. Can't compare it to Falcon days when it was a few weeks from order to delivery.

It will ease in the next 6 months with the removal of full temporary expensing, increase in interest rates and general costs of living.

MG's big numbers are purely fleets (mainly hire cars).

Tesla has also just dropped their pricing on some models, plus a hefty incentive in QLD if you buy one now.

As for Ford still a 12 - 18 month wait on Wildtrak / Raptor and Everest models unless you are lucky enough to snag a cancelled order.

Toyota is still 6 months for Hilux, 24 months for Rav 4 and up to 36 months for LC300.

Cars that no one wants like Volvos you can pretty much walk into the dealership and get.

The price drop and incentives wouldn't affect June though. Probably see that show for September V Facts. They're sold out of production for July/August at the moment.

isn't there still a massive backlog in quarantine though? they may well be getting off the ships, but I still don't think they are getting to the dealers in any numbers

Just looking at numbers, it's been cleared. Ford/Toyota are targeting 5500 a month for Ranger/Hilux so it would suggest they are finding homes for all the cars. If they had a month at 2000-3000 cars, that could be put to supply/delivery issues.

Capacity to build 5000 cars and demand being more than that isn't a supply problem, it's an issue with predicted volumes. Capacity to build 5000 cars but only able to make 3000 (like due to semiconductor issues) would be a supply problem. Or ability to deliver 5000 cars but then only delivering 3000 due to the quarantine issues is again a supply problem.

In this day and age it seems like having supply or predicted volume problems is a positive, because it allows you to increase your prices due to availability issues.

I'm convinced the industry doesn't compete with each other, it benefits all of them.

Well, under supply is usually better than oversupply unless you have a product that can be easily replicated and you want to maximise your return before the competition catches up.

That's why we have Volvo's that you can buy almost immediately vs the Ranger/Hilux and now, Model Y. Tesla know the others are coming in especially BYD and they're trying to get as many out there as possible. They'll lose their edge but they still can't make enough to meet demand for Y/3. Last year was a supply issue for them. This year it's a demand problem.

Going into the 25 I suppose the 300 Series and the Prado appeal to me as of the whole Toyota 4x4 legend, and the Subies for the full time AWD and petrol motors with reasonable pricing. Beyond that I like the Jag SUV which doesn't sell but does have fulltime AWD, handles and is made of alloy so won't ever rust.

Just did Nullarbor again and it's Toyota and daylight - saw a GR 300 and it looked mint in the dark colour. Other practical reasons for choosing them, despite things like the problems they've had with their diesels - service is everywhere and a lot closer than JLR for example when out that way.

I really like what Lexus has done with the new/forthcoming GX, wonder what the next Prado will be like? Twin turbo V6 petrol, or hybrid petrol? Would be very interesting.

My sister has been waiting for a Volvo XC60 B6 since March. Car was built on the water when she committed. It's been sitting on a boat waiting to be quarantined for two months now. The blanket statement about Volvo's being readily available is not completely accurate.

I can only imagine what those sales numbers would be with more production and shipping space,
it still amazes me to know that some vehicles have 18 months to 2 years waiting time.

Most of those sales are simply top brands delivering vehicles that were secured by buyers months ago
and anyone trying to trend sales percentages are just kidding themselves, just limited by supply and delivery.

When the day finally comes and all vehicles are fully autonomous what will "carriage" manufacturers do to differentiate themselves....why would you pay triple for a BMW carriage over an MG carriage when all you have to do is sit back and remember to get out when you reach your destination....

Suppose the same as people on a plane who prefer first class vs economy or people on a train/boat/insert mode here wanting similar.

Early 1985 ordered XF S pack EFI manual, was quoted 3 Months wait, about 2 months later dealer rang and told me a Price Rise of several hundred dollars so I cancelled the order. Was not so good back then.

Its pretty **** though, as far as I'm concerned cars are a commodity item, look how big Hyundai is globally.

We live in an age where everything (except cars it seems) is available at a click of a button, some things you can get within a few hours of paying for it if you live in metropolitan areas.

The demo model they had on the lot they wouldn't discount, was the same price as a brand new one.

Wanted one without a sunroof but because they aren't common it would have had to have been ordered on the factory, rather than just a car the dealership was receiving as stock so would have been 12-18 months away.

Also in white was another problem, there was the option of other colours in stock at other dealerships but no one had white ones.

Kona N was available in stock, if you want a gormless auto SUV you can have it yesterday, that thing is a disgrace its an i30N on stilts that looks like it was designed by someone with a fetish for Susan Boyle and 'plus size models'.
