Default Quick question

Hi guys,

Posting for a mate. He is having problems with his AUII heater. It seems that everything is working apart from the knob that changes the area of heating eg: it wont move up to the windscreen vents, nor to the feet for that matter.

It will change temp and will turn on & off. There is a mouse & rat plague (yes were very rural out here) and there seems to be a wire just in front of the headlights that seem to have been nibbled.

His speedo seems to be not functioning as well. Im assuming these two problems are purely coincidental (well I hope they are). If not the rats must die a slow & painful death :P

Any ideas ????????

A very common problem is that the air intake at the passengers feet sucks up paper or a plastic bag and stops the air going through. To check this have the car off and stick your hand up the vent and feel for paper or plastic. If thats the problem then pull it out.
The knob controls a vacum air switch /solenoid which moves the flap to windscreen, floor etc. Either its losing vacuum/jammed or the switch is stuffed.Try the easy troubleshooting first.

The area of heating control is changed by a vacuum. The engine pulls a vacuum in the system and that then pull various vents open and close.

I would say his problem will be on the back of the heater control it self. The main line that supplies vacuum has come off the control. This has happened to me a few times due to taking the center fascia on and off repeatedly.
To check that it is the problem, you need to
1. Pull the glove box out. Open the glove box and disengage the limit pins by pulling the sides of the glove box inwards. Lower the glove box and firmly lift the right hand side corned to disengage the hinges. Maneuver the glove box from the dash
2.Disconnect the vacuum supply hose from the T piece (red circle) in the vacuum hose harness. Disconnect the 8 port vacuum hose (green circle) harness connect beneath the air intake duct.

If a suction can be heard (it is very evident, easy to hear) then the problem is in behind the center fascia, if no suction is hear, then the problem will be in the engines vacuum lines and vacuum tank.

Yeah your right mother nature, the two problems are coincidental. And i not sure what wire you're on about either.

Cheers

Thanks heaps for the info guys. I will be seeing this car again on the weekend and will check it all out.

The wires are actually a part of the loom that is really behind the headlight. (re reading is a good thing, bad description in the first place). I traced this smallish part of the loom to go back towards the firewall on the passenger side but it is of cause connected to the main loom that goes along the front of the car. This part of the loom has a connector on it & there are two almost identical mini looms that have these connectors, only one is nibbled. The wires are not eaten through but needing more one of those shrink wrap covers to keep it protected. Was a bit curious as to where it belonged. Might be easier if I get some pics next time I am with the car.
