Leaving It All Behind

Anyone here ever had serious thoughts of dropping out of society, Leaving it all behind?
I've had these very real thoughts for the past 14 years and they remain as strong as ever. The whole idea of disappearing and starting this whole new life sounds extremely appealing however I do believe there would be many pitfalls that go along with it.
The feeling of being disconnected with society on so many levels is something that I'm sure many people face on a daily basis but very few care to admit it.

Thoughts?

Over the past few years I've lost a lot of friends (Mainly due to them starting families and doing their own thing, Which I think is fantastic for them - They are doing what they want to and I commend them for that). I don't really have any family left now either. All I have is my girlfriend so I will see what becomes of the relationship before making any decisions. I will however keep researching and planning should I go ahead with it.

I often have a desire to disappear to a quite, secluded property with a small house and a BIG shed for my hobbies. No traffic noise, no nosey neighbours, just me and myself. (Most) people annoy me ha ha.

But reality bites and I just continue what I have always done.

A common thought once you turn 40.
It's a bit of... Wtf have I done with my life all these years, love to start again..
Next ya know you'll be 50 and thinking.. Why didn't I?
Then 60 and... "Oh well I'm still here but at least still breathing"!
We ALL dream of the perfect utopia.......

I sorta did it for a year or so way back in the 70s.
I basically lived on a beach.
It was awesome but society seems to have a way of dragging you back in.

The wife and I sold up and took off caravanning last year for 6 months. We had a ball and loved every minute of it. No stress, no bills, no worries. However, now back into reality, work, the everyday hassles of life and my stress levels are through the roof and health has deteriorated since coming back to the rat race. I would love to drop out completely...if only a way!

Life is a bit easier out in rural areas rather than suburbia, and its cheaper too.

Where I live it takes me about an hour to get into Melbourne via car or train, and our trains go faster, are more comfortable, still have inspectors and stop at less stations. I live further out but I spend 90% of my commute in 6th gear at 100km/h instead of stopping at 5000 traffic lights if I'm driving.

House prices are also cheaper, house and land sets you back $350-$400K here for something thats 1500m2.

Might be worth a look-in to any of you boys/girls struggling in suburbia, still work in the city but live further out where its cheaper, the lifestyle is more laid back and air is cleaner

In my younger years I travelled a bit round Aus'.
Met plenty of people along the way that just go with the flow.
They have a small campervan, travel from town to town, pick up a bit of work in each, stay for a few weeks/months then move to the next place.

If it were me I'd be putting at least 15 to 20K in an investment account to funnel a bit of interest back to the wallet, sell up & get a small camper.
When you have a destination in mind do some ringing around & research on what work is available in that town.
A call to the local tourist info office or a shire council should give you a few leads.
A white card will get you work on building sites, van parks/hotels sometimes have things that need doing in exchange for a free camp site or cash money, fruit & veg is another industry that usually has a constant need for labourers.

I stayed in Kununurra in W.A for about 6 months in 1998. Laboured for a local builder & a local landscaper. Backpacker hostels usually have contacts with farmers in the area too. In the tourist season there's usually work to be found up North.
Just being pro-active & asking around will often find you some cash work.
Being a jack of all trades helps too.

Don't think about it do it.

Sold up everything I no longer wanted including a massive house in Sydney suburbia and left, best thing ever. I had a job to go to, but plenty of work in the bush.

A few years down the track bought a few acres 15 minutes from the beach and payed cash, build a massive shed to store my cars and stuff I still want and paid cash, still debt free with plenty of $$$ in the bank.

Still in the race as I already own my retirement property. Should start building soon and end up with a small debt.

I made sure I am no where near suburbia, cities or shopping centres, just the way I like it, have not even watched TV in about 3 years, makes for a good life.

Going off the power grid, growing your own veggies, minimising costs/taxes, free communal sex... these things are straight forward (maybe the sex is just a myth)

However, it is a big step to completely withdraw.

Of course there is a medium point, "Ziggy", he lives down the road... How is your tolerance to getting wet, having people set you on fire or dogs attacking?

There's a saying 'silence is golden' ..this is so true!!!!! Disconnecting, collecting your thought's, you feel free. And it's in our genes too! That's why we love camp-fires and the smell of BBQ's. We're alive because of them, and a few other things of course.

Something I have been contemplating for the past several years revcore. People were never meant to live in dickhed infested cities surrounded by ever increasing levels of stupid.

I am trying to find a way to separate me, the human being from ME, the entry on a bureaucratic ledger so as to go off grid, completely. It isn't easy, govco hates to lose a human battery (apologies for the Matrix reference).

hell even 11 years ago as an 18 year old in my highly modified ef xr6 id line up the freeway and let it rip wanting to just keep driving to where ever id end up some people arnt meant to live the rigid life society has deemed for us now but you cant ever get free of it unless you play the game itself its maddening to a degree and you can see why some people go crazy in these citys. If only it was like the old days with unexplored lands and continents now everything's owned by someone and nobody wants you there.
