Default Nerve damage

Does anyone know the process/or if nerve damage is treated? I took myself to hospital today and turns out I've done something to the nerves in my left elbow that's made me lose the function of my left hand and wrist. Worst thing is I'm left handed. They said its nerve palsey. I have a referral for phisio, but that sounds odd as I 100% cannot lift my wrist or spread or open my fingers. I can however make a weak fist and lower my wrist.

Ambidextrously rules.

Just keep up exercising your arm, hand and fingers on a regular basis.
I had a hand accident years ago and lost skin feeling. Docs said it was permanent. They were wrong.

I only write with my left hand. I throw and catch a ball, play golf, use a screwdriver etc with my right. But it's still at the moment quite a disability. I get no movement at all trying to lift my wrist palm down. Its floppy. Same with trying to open my fingers past the resting position. The car is a manual so I shouldn't drive, but have relegated myself to the shop and back. With my right hand I open my left one, put it on the stick then grip. It doesn't leave the gear stick. I'm just after more info on how nerves work. I know when they don't it doesn't hurt.

An Occupational Therapist is probably a better option rather than a Physiotherapist.

I sustained a hell of a lot of nerve damage when my foot suffered from a crush injury. A hell of a lot of pain too!

I was sent to an OT and a pain specialist to sort it out. It took years but it is much better than it was.

That sounds like heaps of fun...not. I'm not sure what physio can do untill I can actually move it. Hence my question. My manager who is also a softball coach reckons nerves shut down with the slightest trauma to allow them selves to repair. Problem is he is an electrician not a doctor.

Your GP should be able to refer you to a "specialist" who can tell you whats going on with your limp wrist, after some scans or other tests to determin why you have lost the use of it. May not be nerves thats causing the problem.

I'm going to make 1 out there statement. In the past 2 and a half years I have landed myself in hospital 4 times. First was what ended up with a rebuilt right index finger. It now fings ok but doesn't point properly. Last December gastro issues that were extreme, January same thing, still no answers, and today the nervous arm. As a private health patient (I pay my taxes so I don't want to burden other tax payers) in the public system I have, like the others at the time, received nothing less then excellent doctors or nurses. I must simply not go to the places a current affair do.

I had very similar symptoms years ago, almost thought I was having a stroke on the right side of my body, went to hospital and they started by investigating the elbow. It turned out to be an impinged nerve in my neck, they wanted to operate but I went to a chiropractor first. First adjustment from him and I could move my hand again, it did take a month of weekly visits to fix it fully but at least there was no operations.

Thanks for the insight. I'm off to the gp tomorrow to discuss action plans. I have isolated the time and action of when it happened. Turns out it wasn't simply a dead arm.

How far away are you from Penrith?
A guy who could definitely help you is Rosco Hutchison, the guy is a Wizz, he does physio, chiro, acupuncture etc, I saw physios and specialists etc for a back injury that they threw out and I wish I saw him earlier because I've suffered for years and after less than 6 visits I haven't been back since.

Not that far I'm in the toon. (Toongabbie) tomorrow I'm going to try for an appointment with the doctor I trust in mortlake and see what she recommends. I'm my current state I can't see phisiotherapy helping if my brain can't make my hand move. I still have complete feeling in all my didgets. They and my wrist just don't work. It's like having a steak, 4 sausages and a chipolata attached to the end of a functional arm. And they are uncooked..

Physio did nothing for me, did nothing for my father also, nothing for my bosses wife, nothing for my boss during his injury either, if you don't find yourself having any luck, I can get you in touch with him, I wish I saw him years ago, my father and I both have been seeing physios and spending a fortune and never getting better, this guy is amazing though and he knows when something is real or someone just faking it, so he won't touch people who he knows are just putting it on, that's how confident he is in what he does.

I wasn't taking a shot. Not at all. I'm open to suggestions 100%. I spent a lot if time at the physio as a young bloke due to short tendons in my legs . I just want any form of movement back then work from there.

That's really unfortunate. Sorry to hear you are going through this.
I'm no expert. But have a good mate who has had 3 serious bike/trike accidents. With multiple long term injuries. I've learnt a lot, chatting about his healing.
Neurosurgeon is a must see.
Then there's Chiroprators, and their different styles ( gentle treatment vs cracking all your joints). And Physiopath/Osteopath practitioners too. Even better when someone is qualified in all of these. This treatment would be looking at the whole picture (your spinal/nerve health). Your nerves branch out from your Spinal cord, to their respected body parts.
I've had Micro-surgery for a hand injury, and the Hand Physiotherapy was part of the healing. All women practitioners (by observation), who specialized in Hands.
Some physiotherapists also combine Cranial Sacral Therepy.
Acupuncture is good too. I prefer the Tradional Chinese Accupuncturists, with China training.
So there's a start. Try everything. Sometimes you're going to feel like you're wasting time and throwing money away. Because you rarely find the best Practioner straight away.
In summary, look up these:
Neurosurgeon
Chiropractor
Physiotherapy
Osteopath
Cranial Sacral Therepy
Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture.

Good luck

There's not nearly enough history for anyone here to attempt a diagnosis (not that online diagnoses are reliable anyway).

I could have a stab and give you half a dozen things it might be. Of course, none of them may be correct.

redxm takes the prize.

Until you know what it is, you won't know what treatment is required.

I'm going to get a gp apointment tomorrow to work out a game plan. It was more a question on if the road is long, or a short trip down the street. I've already had the trip to hospital. There is no self diagnosis in this case. I had something not work, got it checked and now have to follow it up. Basic tasks prove interesting doing them wrong handed. It may be somewhat of a challenge, but it makes life fun and interesting working around those issues .

After my gp (and an hours drive to get there, I trust her) did the standard poking and prodding, I knew it wasn't good when she asked do I have much in the way of sick leave. I do, but I'm not in a good mood with the situation. I said it bluntly to my employer, it doesn't just prevent me from working, it affects just about every aspect of living. Not happy.

I don't know where your "west" is but given that you're not happy and you have private health I'd be pushing for a specialist referral.

GP's are great but it doesn't take long for them to run out of options.

Good luck with it anyway. Doesn't sound like fun :(

Theres going to be some to and fro to various places in the near future I can see. It's just a bit odd that I haven't physically injured anything.

You don't need recent trauma for nerve stuff.

The sky is the limit as to what is the cause.

Old whiplash, old sporting injury, wrong pillow, overuse, weak shoulder/back muscles, and so on.

Then there's fibromyalgia, diabetes and a whole host of other stuff.

That's why it's impossible to diagnose without sufficient information.

(You're not a golfer, are you? If so, see a psychiatrist, lol)

The good news is that a lot of nerve pain is simply caused by compression.

Mostly not difficult to overcome but may take a bit of time.

Nah, no golf. There is no pain. I still have feeling, just no function. Western Sydney by the way. It's just a learning curve working out how to do basic things opposite to the way I have done them for 30 years.

Nice, I like your correction. I wish things were just acting up, but they flat out just don't respond. It's like my left hand is telstra. You know, when it works it works anywhere, when it doesn't there is nothing to get your communication across and any action. I think too much.

the symptoms you say are similar to a bumped funny bone, but that goes away.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEcNgyIOO_E

i fell from a horse last may onto a hard road and damaged my left elbow. there was soft tissue damage. it only healed last month. the physio would rub it, as there may be adhesion's on the tendons and ligaments.

you might have a pinched nerve at the elbow.

i had a pinched nerve in my back once, the pain was incredible, people thought it was having a heart attack , it took two blokes, one under each arm and they dragged me to the car for the hospital. it basically fixed itself.
