Default Customs department issues

Got linked to this interesting documentary, on the Grunt Files FB page.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umVj5XQYAi8

In short,
old mate tried to import a 59' Corvette convertible, but got blocked by customs, so he challenged them and it escalated from there.

He took them to the administrative appeals tribunal and won, so they had to let him bring it in.
BUT..... once the car was in the country, customs impounded it and refused to release it for various reasons - one after another,
incl, wanting him to get an Aircon import licence, plus approvals for other gear in the Vette.

He did some digging in to what was going on, and accidentally uncovered a bunch of government corruption.

He made a documentary on his epic adventure, and as far as I can tell, customs are still holding the Vette.
Apparently, he's now taking them to the international high court or something drastic like that.

No wonder so many people say it's hard to import vehicles now.
God help us if its modified!

Certainly makes me want to ask our 'Govco' a bunch of questions.

It is my understanding that any vehicle that has been MODIFIED from original specs would not be eligible for import approval and subsequent registration for use on Australian roads under the pre 1989 scheme.

He ended up paying the $400 air conditioning fee to get the car after them holding it for over 12 months.
It does seam a bit dodgy some of the stuff he uncovered though.
