when it does happen to me I make some extremly innapropriate comments they normally get upset and say you can't talk to me like that to which I reply "you can't call me as I'm on the do not call register if you wish to complain so will I and you will receive a fine of up to $110,000" they normally hung up then

I've found it works also but as you say when someone fills out a competition form somewhere in the terms and conditions which nearly no one reads there is a section which asks " can we call you" and at the bottom then we all tick we agree with the terms and conditions. On the net it prevents you from going any further unless you agree to the T+C. If you don't you can't enter. I'ts the main reason I don't enter many comps.

Thanks Spoolman.

What I do when they call is tell them where to get off and hang up. The knock at the door is greated the same way, followed by the door greeting their nose if it's too close.

Don't forget, fellas, the Do Not Call register is only enforceable and applicable to companies phoning FROM WITHIN Australia. You will still get calls from the overseas call centres, because they do not have to comply with the Do Not Call legislation.

Best way to get rid of them is just to hang up. Remember there is still a human being doing a crappy job on the other end of the phone. I just say, "No thanks, goodbye" and hang up. I'll talk over them if necessary, but that's it. Or give the phone to your three year old toddler.

I found this works really well too. Either we do that or we say "Just a moment we will get the person you are after", then we put the phone down. We go back every couple of minutes and say "they will be here shortly", and put the phone down again.

Longest we had someone waiting was about 10 mins. After doing all that, we had a major drop in the number of calls we got.

Yep - although I still get a couple of calls - I usually just demand things for free (ie if offered a free mobile I want a better one but wont sign up to thier plan, or if they are offering a credit card I want interest free for 10 years - these are my terms take it or leave it) They never really know how to respond to that.

I now do something that I saw jerry sienfeld do on the show once. If they show up at the door I just say that I am busy now ,but if they give me there home address I will come around at a time that suits me.

We need a ' Do not knock ' list too. I know I can slam the door on these lying idiots, but really I shouldn't have to open to the door to some nut I can barely understand as he lies to me about " rewards " and " discounts I'm about to receive " in exchange for apparently " nothing at all "

I've had a silent number for a number of years - just switched to a resold Telstra service with my ISP and decided to just go unlisted and save $4 a month. Have just registered my numbers with donotcall instead. Should deter most of them
