Cricketer Phil Hughes has died as a result of injuries to his head.
A bouncer was directed at him which struck him in the back of the head causing an injury to an artery. Condolences to his family. |

Just goes to show how fickle life can be, a 25 year old bloke in perfect health leaves his home and family to go out and have a game of cricket and gets a freak hit with a cricket ball and it ends his life.
I don't follow cricket or know the fellow, but watching the news it's obvious the young bloke was well liked and had a good career in front of him, very sad indeed. condolances to his family and friends. |

A very sad incident from many viewpoints.
I must admit, I'm still a bit numb from it and in a state of disbelief, having played cricket for many years (pre-helmets) and having seen many a batsman felled unintentionally by a bouncer. His death has really rocked the cricket world to its foundations. RIP Phil Hughes 63 no forever... |

the outpouring of emotion from around the world is fantastic. Phil Hughes was one of the nice guys. a typical country lad that was known for being quiet spoken and very polite.
tributes from even non cricketing stars like andy murray and rafa nadal. Hughes had been given a number of chances at International level already, but had failed to do enough to really cement his spot in the side, but he never complained and just tried harder for next time... and there would have been a next time. he was just too good to not make it eventually. I don't know Hughes at all, but as a big cricket lover, this has affected me much more than i thought it would. I'm sure i'm not alone. Condolences to family and friends. also thinking of sean abbott at this time. he did nothing wrong, but would no doubt be feeling a lot of guilt. hopefully this doesn't end his career, but its going to be a tough period in his life. |

Clarke's press conference brought a tear to my eye. He did well to get through it.
Hughes ODI #64 retired.

R.I.P
Such an incredible outpouring of grief. To see the New Zealand players so visibly moved prior to the second day's play in the test against Pakistan. Brendon McCullum scoring N.Z's fastest ever test hundred with "P.H" written on his shirt. To think that the Queen has sent a condolence message to Phil's parents. Even front page news in The New York Times. I, like so many others, can't believe how affected I've been by the death of someone I've never met. I just hope that Sean Abbott is getting the professional and personal support he needs at this time. How I'd cope in his position, I'll never know.

many find it hard to work out why God called Phil Hughes and may be it was god asking him to come and play with his team to play with some of the worlds finest players like
Sir Donald Bradman and many others who could refuse to play with the master Sir Donald RIP mate

http://www.news.com.au/sport/cricket...-1227138795741 Clarke press conference http://www.news.com.au/sport/cricket...-1227139054039 If you can hold it together watching these, you are doing better than me. Clarke cops a fair bit of criticism but he's standing tall as captain this last few days. |

As a Port Adelaide supporter, I know exactly what the cricket world is feeling, as we went through this 2 years ago when we lost John McCarthy in Las Vegas.
As devastated as I am for Hughesy, I can't begin to imagine how Sean Abbott is feeling. The country is there for him, it's not his fault and I really hope he can get back on the field and bowling again, and yes, bouncers too. This was nothing but a freak accident. RIP Hughesy. #63notoutforever Hope he's building a new partnership with Sir Donald Bradman. We're gonna miss you dearly champ!

As with the death of others like Brockie for example, this was a case of a little bit either way and there would only be an injury instead of death. One bounce of a ball to one particular vital part of exposed skull and that's it. Damn shame for such a young bloke (or any bloke for that matter). I don't even care a damn about the sport of cricket but even I found it very sad.

amazing how far and wide this is reaching.
Sir Elton John performing a concert in Germany, dedicated his song 'Don't let the sun go down on me', to Phil Hughes! http://www.news.com.au/sport/cricket...-1227139332282 |

I'm no Soccer fan but the game at AAMI Stadium that stopped at the 63rd minute (with one minute of clapping) was absolutely amazing, especially at the beginning with a minute's silence and the cricket bat resting on the soccer ball.
Cheers Vincenzo

Qantas are putting on extra planes for those wishing to get to Macksville for the funeral on Wednesday.
The first test has been postponed. Another young kid played cricket yesterday and retired himself on 37 - said, "That's Hughesy's century." I'm pretty old and do not remember any outpouring of sustained emotion like this ever before. |

I was sad to read this while being stuck during the freak storm last Thursday but two things I watched/heard really bought it home for me.
- Listening to Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald on Nova 96.9 Friday evening - Watching Michael Clarke finally let it out Saturday morning RIP Hughesy...
