Default 1936 SS Ford

A mate emailed these photo's the other day. My apologies if they have been posted before, but if so they deserve another outing. The story of their manufacture is below.

1936 Stainless Steel Ford”

The following photos are of a 1936 Ford Tudor sedan built for Allegheny Ludlum Steel in 1936.

This is one of only four of these cars in existence, and is the only one still running and roadworthy.

This car is in exceptional condition. All four cars had gone over 200,000 miles before they were removed from service.

These cars were built for Allegheny Steel as promotional and marketing projects.

Each year, the top salesmen were given the honor of driving them for one year.

The 85 hp V-8 engine was surprisingly smooth and quiet.

The car was insured for $1.5 million for the trip to the Louisville show.

The dies used to manufacture the body panels were ruined by stamping the stainless steel, so no more of these cars will ever be produced.

They also built 2 1960 Thunderbirds & 3 1966 Lincoln Continentals.

Well, if it is stainless, then rust is inevitable.

If it was Chinese stainless steel it would rust the first time water touched it.

Cheap chinese made tools and utinsils are shocking.

Obviously you don't buy cheap chinese made stuff if you want it to last.

I raised that question a few months ago why we don't use stainless steel to make cars.

Then I remembered when I had to drill out two stainless steel pop rivets... Its a bastard to work with.

"Stainless" isn't "rustless"...even the best stuff will corrode unless well maintained.
